Review of Kacang Pool Special @ Eunos Crescent Food Centre ● Egyptian National Dish in Singapore Hawker Centre

Looking for something light and relatively healthful in a Singapore hawker centre? If you are near Eunos Crescent Food Centre, you can try out Kacang Pool Special.

There are very few kacang pool stalls in Singapore and not many more in Johor Bahru. There's one known as Kacang Pool Mustafa at Geylang Serai Food Centre.

Stall name: Kacang Pool Special

Address: 4A Eunos Crescent, stall #01-03, Singapore 402004 (Eunos Market & Food Centre)

Nearest MRT: 3 minutes walk from Eunos station

Hours: 8:00am - 7:00pm (Weds off)

I like Kacang Pool Special at Eunos Crescent, a low profile stall. Anyway, all kacang pool stalls in Singapore are low profile because it is not a mainstream dish here.

Actually, kacang pool is the national dish of Egypt where it is known as ful madammas. It's a lightly spiced broad bean stew eaten with chewy unleavened flatbread.

In Singapore and Johor, the dish is slightly tweaked. At Kacang Pool Haji in JB, the bean stew is literally beefed up by adding ground beef to the stew. I love it.

This is the version at Kacang Pool Special at Eunos Crescent.

The broad bean stew is topped with a fried egg with golden runny yolk ( 👍 I like runny yolk, can't eat hard boiled yolk 😬 ), chopped onion, chopped green chili and a section of toasted French loaf. It is simple and not a heavy dish, so it is just nice when I want something light and savoury. A serving is not enough for a meal, especially for guys.

The broad bean stew is like a slightly watery pâté (of beans), savoury and mildly spiced. I usually break the runny yolk and stir it into the pastey stew to thicken it as well as give it a bit of egginess.

The toasted French loaf works perfectly, in lieu of flatbread. It is eaten by dipping the bread in the bean stew or scooping it up with the French loaf. The outside is slightly chewy crisp while the fluffy inside soak up the flavourful stew like a pillowy sponge.

It works just as well by spreading the stew on the bread like pâté.

Give the dish a try, if you are near a kacang pool stall in Singapore or JB.
