Uncle Bob was excited by the braised goose at CMJ Teochew Restaurant which he stumbled upon on social media. So, we crossed the Causeway to try it 😁
CMJ is located in R & F Mall which is 10 minutes walking distance from the Johor Bahru CIQ (immigration) building. R & F Mall is connected to the CIQ by a pedestrian link bridge but I am not sure whether it is operational now as we went there by car. The sprawling mall is still relatively quiet with a portion of the shops empty.
We walked into CMJ Kitchen without reservations and they were still able to accommodate us for dinner. Most of the customers spoke Teochew and looked like visitors from China.
CMJ is run by a Teochew couple from Shenzhen, China where their family have a CMJ restaurant. Hubby is the chef, wife is the manager, and they are assisted by a platoon of Myanmese workers.
Menu is on two pages. Nine of us, we picked most of their recommended dishes from appetizer to mains to dessert.
Handmade salted egg roll.
Teochew fried kway teow with beef. CMJ Kitchen mill their own rice flour and make their own kway teow which was relatively thick and tasted sweet from rice.
Braised pork "snow meat" - supposedly pork belly but mostly tender lean meat.
The braised pork intestine. Soft tender spongy savoury salty
Braised beef.
Braised goose - our reason for crossing the border today.
They cook only two birds a day. At dinner time, they were almost sold out.
It was nicely done - moist, soft tender, just right intensity of flavours though a little flat savoury salty. Goose flavour wasn't really discernible from the savoury braising stock.
Stir fried yaw mak. The obligatory green but we were impressed by the savoury lardy flavours and wok hei which accentuated the fresh green flavours without killing its juicy crunch or taste.
Don't know why the obligatory orh nee came in the middle of our meal 😅
Blown away by the beef balls 💣 It was tenderly crunchy chewy and tasted beefy sweet. We can taste and appreciate the freshness of the beef.
Stir fried sweet potato. So impressed by the earlier green that we ordered another one. Just as good with the same wok skill from the chef.
We also ordered another round of beef balls. Certainly the best beef balls in Johor and even a bit better than the Hakka beef balls at The Beef House at Syed Alwi Road, Singapore, in my humble opinion.
Then, lady boss came and offered us goose liver and offal and which we gladly accepted.
Braised till a bit stiff, unlike the buttery melt in your mouth style of French foie gras. At RM168, it was the most expensive item on our bill today.
Goose gizzard that came with the liver and innards.
If I come back with only one or two companions, I will order braised goose with beef balls and stir fried greens. I would also try their beef kway teow soup as they make their own kway teow, and have good beef.
