Cheok Kee Michelin Braised Duck Rice Geylang Bahru 祝记 ☏ 9692 2168

Cheok Kee 祝记 | 69 Geylang Bahru Market & Food Centre, stall #01-35, Singapore 330069 🚅 Geylang Bahru ☏ 9692 2168 ⏰ 11:45am - 6pm (Thurs, Fri off)
Have been curious to try Cheok Kee Duck Rice 祝记 at Geylang Bahru hawker centre ever since it earned a place in Singapore Michelin Guide's Bib Gourmand list.

A handful of people were waiting 15 minutes before the stall opened for the day.

The lunch time queue. Cheok Kee is one of the most popular stalls at Geylang Bahru hawker centre.

There were many well browned braised ducks behind the glass window but hidden by the wall of pictures and newspaper cuttings, etc.

Cheok Kee's current owner 王荣福 worked for the original Cheok Kee at Old Airport Road Hawker Centre in 1983. When the previous owner retired, he gifted the brand 祝记 to 王荣福 who brought it to new heights like clinching the Bib Gourmand award in 2023, 2024.

I had the $4 serving with $1 add-on for liver, $5 altogether. 王荣福 had always priced his food affordably saying many of his customers are seniors and retirees living around the area.

The meal came with complimentary tangy spicy chili sauces and soup. Forgot to photograph the soup but it was not memorable - just some slight dangui 当归 taste in clear watery soup.

Deboned duck and liver cut in thick strips with a generous splash of thick sauce, laid over flavoured rice (default serving). Cheok Kee also has porridge and plain boiled white rice.

The thick strips of braised duck meat were tender with mild sweet savoury taste which did not overwhelm the ducky sweetness from the meat.

For $1, they were generous with the tender braised duck liver provided - maybe, I looked like one who appreciates such "ah pek" food. Next time, I shall ask if I could have a mix of liver and gizzard for $1 🤭

The rice boiled with savoury braising stock was sweet savoury. A bit of the braising sauce splashed on the duck also soaked into the rice. I like the tender nutty texture of the rice though others (e.g. my kaki today) might feel it was a little undercooked (which it wasn't).

I couldn't bring myself to eat that flavourful strip of fatty skin 🤭 Cheok Kee serves a good value, tasty meal.

  1. The rice texture is good..our rice often over cooked here as if everyone is 'bo geh' here 😂 one thing I was impressed in China is 90% of the time the rice was perfectly cooked.

  2. I think this was part of the family that ran the Duck rice along Mcpherson road.. 40 yrs ago, it had a blue color fencing then they had to move off.

Some of their workers broke off after working for them and started their own stalls but they cannot succeed even though they are young..
