Just had dim sum at the So Good Dining, it was so good! We were so pleased that we went back for more just 3 days later 🤤
I like this place because I love dim sum and have been looking out for a place I can come back to regularly for good food at friendly prices. I think I found it at So Good Dining.
When you come up the escalator to level 4 of i12 Katong, you will see a queue for So Good Char Chan Tang on your right.
On your left is the entrance to So Good Dining 小菜厅.
Inside So Good Dining, the L-shaped space is narrow, no frills, no decor, just draped round tables, comfortable chairs, and so good food served.
There's not even a token picture on the wall. I have never seen such minimalist decor but I. Don't. Care.
To me, good food is all I need and So Good Dining has plenty of it, I soon found out.
Buddy Brandon set up a special lunch of off menu dishes. We had a small dim sum selection as appetizers.
The dim sum menu of steamed, fried, baked items and desserts was quite extensive. Ordering was by the old way of checking off with a pencil on a list of items.
We didn't order much as the dim sum were just teasers (but they got me happily hooked 😂 ).
We enjoyed these dim sum with Ming Qian Bi Lo Chun tea arranged by buddy Brandon, a Chinese tea connoisseur (you know I don't use such words loosely).
蜜酱金钱肚 $6.80 Beef Tripe with Honey Sauce. Soft spongy delicately chewy tripe infused with savoury sweet flavours with subtle beefiness.
魚肚鸡扎 $7.20 Chicken with Fish Maw Wrapped in Beancurd Skin.
蛋黄千層糕 $4.80 Steamed Egg Yolk Cake.
潮州糯米卷 $6.00 Teochew Glutinous Rice Rolls.
鲜蘑菇鸡粒酥 Baked Chicken & Mushroom Pastry. Soft tender chicken and mushroom bits in a savoury tender sauce in a crumbly fluffy buttery pastry cup.
The simple pork and carrot soup was tasty, comforting, and extremely satisfying. It's like a loving mom or grandma's homemade soup.
Red carrot puree, chopped red and green carrot, and pork boiled and simmered for hours. No secret, just effort and dedication in making a familiar dish excellently.
The following dishes not on the menu was specially arranged by buddy Brandon 🙏 with So Good Dining.
4.2 kilo Wild Hirame!
Wild caught Hirame or Olive Flounder from Hokkaido prefecture of Japan. Served Cantonese steamed with light sauces, aromatics, fragrant oil and chen pi (dried tangerine peel). The chefs of So Good brought out the best of the meaty, succulent, natural sweetness of the rare 4.2 kilo wild caught Hirame.
Yeah, you can only entrust such precious ingredients with proven masters.
Roe from the Hirame. All I tasted was sweetness from the roe complemented by gentle savouriness from the sloshy sauce and fragrance from the scallion.
Yeah, this indulgent dish tasted a lot better than its good looks. The snowy white crustacean meat was crunchy, juicy, with gentle umami savoury sweetness. The fluffy pillowy egg white bed infused some of the crustacean umami which blended nicely with white truffle to make a delicious foil showcasing the lobster.
1.5 kilo Aori Ika Big Reef Squid from Shizuoka Prefecture.
Aori Ika big reef squid from Shizuoka Prefecture steamed with fermented shrimp paste.
Crunchy springy meaty sweet squid with gentle umami savouriness from fermented shrimp paste.
We enjoyed the Hirame, lobster and squid with Spring Jasmine tea.
Aori Ika big reef squid "toast".
Huge hamaguri clams 蛤.
Stir-fried hamaguri clams with crispy noodles. Can't really see the clams under all the aromatics and sauce.
My tummy was already so full by now but I couldn't stop myself from indulging in these fried noodles softened a little and infused with richly umami savoury sweet flavours from the sauce.
Our squid "toast", and hamaguri clams were paired with osmanthus Long Jing tea.

We enjoyed ourselves so much at So Good Dining that we came back 3 days later to have more dim sum 😁 We enjoyed everything!
Shrimp Dumpling.
Pork Ribs with Black Bean. One of my favourite dim sum items. The meat was fresh and done so tender and sweet with a bit of gentle balancing savouriness and a touch of mild spicy heat.
Chicken Feet with Black Bean.
Beef Balls with Vegetable.
Egg Yolk Custard Bun.
Malay Sponge Cake.
Steamed Rice Roll with Shrimp.
Steamed Rice Roll with Beef.
Deep Fried Yam Puff.
Pan Fried Carrot Cake.
Pan Fried Chives Dumpling. Had an encore of this. The filling was chives and strips of ham.
Baked Egg Tart.
Teochew Dumpling (soon kueh). Inside the rice skin pocket, the cubes of jicama bean (muang guang) were stewed with stock and sauce. They were crunchy, juicy and tasted savoury sweet. There were stewed peanuts inside too which added nutty textures and flavour.
Baked Mini Polo Buns with butter.
We also had again all the items we ate three days before (but I am not repeating their pictures here).
Double confirmed and chopped. So Good Dining is one of my top of the mind go-to spots for dim sum in Singapore now. Need to be back to try the menu dishes in So Good Dining.

It'll be great to have an idea of how much those special dishes cost :-)
ReplyDeleteI paiseh to ask Brandon as that was his treat. The main cost I believe was for the ingredients.
DeleteOn my return trip, we spent $192 on the dim sum for five people. We left totally full and happily satisfied
Haven't tried the main courses on the regular menu yet
