Du Du Cooked Food Kueh Tu Tu📍Jurong West 505 Market & Food Centre 嘟嘟糕 ☎ 96858694

Tu Tu Kueh is a Singapore dessert in danger of going extinct. Now only a few stalls still serve Tu Tu Kueh and most of them are from the same Tan family.

One of the stalls is the Tan family's third generation Du Du Cooked Food at stall #01-19 at Jurong West 505 Market & Food Centre.

Tu Tu Kueh are steamed rice cakes filled with a choice of crushed toasted peanuts or shredded coconut pulp.

Amazingly, Tu Tu Kueh is still made the same way using the same contraption today. It's a uniquely Singapore cultural artefact. (National Archive of Singapore photo.)

Tu Tu Kueh has its unique features while similar to the Malay putu piring and Taiwanese zhuang yuan gao.

At Du Du Cooked Food, a stash of five tu tu kueh costs SGD$3. I requested for a mix of peanut and coconut fillings - Du Du Cooked Food stall offers two options.

Each tu tu kueh looked like a large thick coin set on a square of attap palm leaf. I like this old school look and all natural food, no plastic. (Nowadays I try my utmost to avoid processed food.)

The rice flour was compacted, quite dense and firm but still tender. The flour was soft grainy, not fine powder. I like this soft grainy, subtly fluffy texture.

The crushed roasted peanut filling was sugary soft nutty. More sugar than peanut in flavour.

The coconut filling was also sweetened with red sugar.

I like the coconut filling better as I like the taste of shredded coconut pulp.

Tu tu kueh is an unheralded Singapore food icon which is getting rarer. Hope it can be preserved for future generations. The least we could do is to support the tu tu kueh stalls, eat it more often while the artisanal sweet snack is still available.
