Updated 24 May 2019. Today's lunch is at Nasi Padang Tampoi off Jalan Tampoi in Johor Bahru, thanks to tip off by a Johor friend.
Nasi Padang Tampoi is a typical simple, humble shop lot eatery which is comfortable, bright and clean.
Jimmy, the cheerful owner has been running his nasi padang shop for over 30 years now. Ten plus years at a road side stall under the railway bridge at Jalan Tampoi and 20+ years at this shop lot.
Jimmy runs the Nasi Padang shop with his sisters Annie and Amy.
Kakak is also a key person in Jimmy's kitchen.
The menu and price list is prominently displayed on the wall.
Nasi Padang Tampoi is popular with workers from the factories, workshops and offices around the Tampoi area. I also saw families with children having their lunch here.
The food is well executed - nicely cooked with the food's freshness and natural flavours intact. Overall, the flavours are mildly savoury sweet with gentle spicy notes. The tastes reminds me of the popular curry rice shops in Singapore but Nasi Padang Tampoi has the signature Padang beef rendang and does not serve pork.
The house made sambal chili is crustacean savoury, sweet, and spicy with sourish notes.
We love this popular fried chicken which is crispy outside but sweet and moist inside. We had three rounds of this delicious chicken today :-D We saw an old lady with a bouncing grinning toddler in tow, happily taking away half a dozen of these fried chicken to enjoy at home.
We also love this curry chap chai (curried vegetables) which is fresh vegetables cooked till soft in savoury sweet, mildly spicy curry. Perfect when splashed onto a mound of fluffy snowy white rice.
This crispy savoury sweet fried tapioca chip is a signature of Nasi Padang Tampoi.
We came back 2 days later to try their Kurma Kambing (lamb). It was gooood..... soft tender juicy meat with very slight mutton flavour underneath the mildly spicy spices.
We also tried the Rendang Lembu (beef). The same tender juiciness and mild spices but now with slight beefiness. We love this too.
We enjoyed our lunches at Nasi Padang Tampoi and will be back for their curry fish head :-D
->> Humble little shop serving well loved Nasi Padang here for over 30 years. Over 20 freshly cooked dishes and we love every one that we've tried so far. Fresh ingredients, well executed, mild well balanced flavours, reasonable prices.
