A reader left a comment on my last post on mee hoon kueh in JB and alerted me to O Master Q mee hoon kueh shop 和合老夫子面粉果 in Taman Maju Jaya.
So, I quickly made my way here at the quiet end of Jalan Abiad in Taman Maju Jaya (often mistaken for the adjacent Taman Pelangi).
Inside Lao Fu Zi O Master Q mee hoon kueh shop, it's the usual Malaysian style bare bones but clean, bright and comfortable eatery.
The busy little kitchen out at the front of the shop.
We ordered a large sized RM6 serving. The aroma of fried anchovies greeted our noses when the bowl of mee hoon kueh arrived.
The broth has a heavy body with robust sweet savoury and anchovy flavours. It's a really delicious, rich flavoured broth made by boiling mainly pork socket bones and anchovies.
The hand torn kueh come in different shapes and sizes. It's quite thick and is aptly described as kueh (cake). I like the bite of the kueh which is tender and a bit gummy (but not sticky or starchy).
These pork balls though bought from a supplier have very good mouth feel and nice gentle porcine flavour.
The egg - I tried to be quick with my photo taking, but still.... it's no longer runny ;-p
The owner Mr Ng 黃明發 has been running O Master Q Mee Hoon Kueh for 22 years now.
Mr Ng assisted by his daughter at the shop still makes mee hoon kueh, old pot by old pot in the traditional way.
The reader commented that O Master Q Mee Hoon Kueh is the best in Johor Bahru. Yes, it is very good indeed. If you like robust tasting broth and thick soft chewy kueh, Lao Fu Zi may be your favourite too :-D

DeleteIs it still open? I was there last month. I sat down outside and was ready to order. A lady approached me to take order. But when I ordered mee hoon kueh, she told me they are not selling. She said they sell normal tze char. I also noticed that there was no stall where it used to be.
ReplyDeleteJust tried today (16 Aug 16). Mr Ng is still tending the stall.
DeleteWent for dinner tonight. Mr Ng shifted to no 78the next door shop. Nice atmosphere. Not too noisy. Among the better Mee Hoon kueh in Jb
