I got a tip off about a kopitiam Western food hawker stall in Taman Johor Jaya run by a well experienced restaurant chef.

I went down to Johor Jaya and spotted Paul at his humble little stall 一寶西餐 at Xia Seng kopitiam 香城海鲜餐室. Paul started his career over 20 years ago at Viking Restaurant in JB (now closed) and was executive chef for a large cafe chain in JB for 10 years.

As I am a chicken chop lover, I ordered 一寶西餐's Black Pepper Chicken (RM11).

It's a large chicken thigh, flattened into a good sized slab of meat with skin on. The chicken is pan seared till the outside is lightly browned with slight caramelisation. The chicken chop is splashed with gooey home made black pepper brown sauce.

The chicken chop comes with sides of shoestring fries and baked beans with a dribble of mayonnaise.

I enjoyed the tender, juicy slab of chicken with the delicious black pepper sauce.

I prefer my chicken chop thicker and bigger but for RM11, 一寶西餐's chicken chop is hard to beat for taste and value.

I wanted to eat a spaghetti dish next but Paul doesn't have aglio e olio, my favourite way of eating pasta. So, we settled for Paul's Seafood Pasta (RM12).

When the seafood spaghetti arrived, I was surprised by the large serving and delighted with the careful, meticulous plating. The spaghetti is served with fried breaded dory fish, scallops and shelled shrimps.

As I did not specify how I wanted the spaghetti done, it was cooked till soft al dente (which is the default). The texture is likeable, especially with the well balanced sweet savoury home made sauce. The fried breaded dory fish, scallops and shelled shrimps were nice too.

Paul said that the spaghetti can be cooked softer or stiffer according to customer's preference. Just let him know when making your order.

For RM12, it's a very competent and likeable plate of seafood pasta.

During our dinner, Sia Seng kopitiam towkay suggested that we try their signature milk tea (RM2.20).

Indeed, the mildly sweet tea was nice and went very well with the food I was eating at 一寶西餐.

->> If you crave Western food late at night and is around the Johor Jaya area, 一寶西餐 would fit the bill very well in a humble coffee shop setting. As for me, I would like to come back to try 一寶西餐's other dishes especially their lamb chops :-D
