Food spotting in Taman Daya this sunny morning, and stumbled upon Gan Heong seafood noodle shop.
Have to admit that we were first attracted by appearances.
The wide range of fried and fresh fish, shell fish, big prawns, fresh pork and even frogs displayed in a large glass cabinet caught our attention.
There were even chunks of Giant Grouper 龍躉.
Stepping inside, the shop is typical of simple Malaysian eateries. Bare bones furnishing but clean, cool and comfortable.
We ordered a basic fish soup with bee hoon at RM11. It was slightly more expensive than our other favourite fish soup places in Johor Bahru at Teck Lai and Fei Long.
One spoonful of this broth and I was convinced to add Gan Heong seafood soup to my list of favourites. It was savoury sweet with depth and lots of layers from the many different ingredients including pork bones, chicken and seafood. During our chat with the elderly lady boss, she stressed that there is no MSG in the broth.
The leather jacket fish 雞肉魚 were fresh and well fried, so that while it was crispy outside, the inside was still moist and naturally sweet.
With this quality of ingredients and tastiness, this fish soup is well worth the RM11.
We liked the fish soup so much that we followed immediately with a bowl of Gan Heong's signature seafood soup to try.
For RM13, in the same broth, we got two big prawns, la la clams, fresh fish slices, fish cake slices, pork slices, pork intestines, fish balls, pork liver, squid, tomatoes and leafy greens.
Lots of different flavours and textures, and in my opinion, good value for RM13 given the amount of food and it's freshness.
But, my personal preference is still for the fried fish soup.
This sambal chili has nice crustacean savoury belacan flavour with a sharp spicy hot sting.
Sometimes, the boss 一哥 does the cooking personally.
Another customer's lunch :-p
Next visit, I want to try this fish soup with added pork kidney and also another bowl with the Giant Grouper :-D
