During my past life, I like attending courses at the Singapore Civil Service College - it lets me get away from work for a few days 😃 and also lets me have a chance to lunch at Holland Drive hawker centre 😋 which is just steps away.
There are plenty of choices at Holland Drive hawker centre, but most of the time, I just ended up with "set lunch" at Leong Wei Roasted Delight. Since I was in the area today, I dropped in on my old haunt.
As usual, there was a queue - but, hey, the stall hasn't even open for business yet 😂
11:30am - Customers, mostly regulars, were waiting for Leong Wei Roasted Delight to open.
Then, as the clock approaches 12:00 noon, the queue gets up. Many were taking away multiple packets, so be patient 😂
My usual order - mixed plate of roast duck, char siew and siew yok, bowl of watercress soup and lightly greased rice - all for SGD7.90.
Heap of roast duck, siew yok (sio bak) and char siew in a pile and drizzled with a savoury dark sauce. Mr. 吕, the stall holder roasts everything with charcoal at the stall in the morning. They were in Hougang for 20 years and here at Holland Drive for over 10 years.
My favourite in this heap is Leong Wei's roast duck. Not much fat (wish there was more) but the lean meat was still moist and had layers of deep but not overpowering savoury flavours. The savoury thin golden brown skin had a nice slight crisp. Delicious.
Most of the siew yok (sio bak) was cut into little strips like French fries. It's a little too small and skinny for my liking. But, the meat and fat had just the right balance of savoury sweetness and the golden brown skin was crackly crispy. "Kwek kwek" sound as one of my buddies say.
Leong Wei's savoury sweet char siew is better than average - tender, juicy and not too sweet, but they do not have my favourite KL style fatty "crystal" cut. Great for folks who don't like too much fat in their char siew.
I will always have this bowl of traditional Cantonese style watercress soup. Just pork bone stock with bits of salted vegetables and a bunch of watercress sweetened with red dates. All natural savoury sweetness.
Flavours from real natural ingredients, not synthetic MSG nonsense.
The queue as I was leaving after my lunch.
👉 It's always a satisfying lunch of roast meats at Leong Wei Roasted Delight 良伟腊味饭 at a reasonable price.
