Last night, our bloggie kakis gathered at Serenity Spanish Bar & Restaurant in Takashimaya Shopping Centre in Singapore.
Serenity Spanish Bar & Restaurant was a pioneer of Spanish cuisine in Singapore with their first outlet in Vivo City. Now Serenity also has a third outlet in Sanur, Bali, Indonesia.
Inside Serenity at Takashimaya, the decor was neo-classical Spanish with ornate heavily padded chairs, charming chandeliers, and a large mural of dynamic, fiery and flamboyant Spanish flare.
The five of us had a sumptuous dinner graciously hosted by Pin.
Crema Mariscos SGD16.80++
Homely, heartwarming rich Spanish seafood cream soup loaded with mussels, dory fish, squid, prawns and thickened with potatoes and tomatoes. Savoury sweet flavours with layers of soft textures.
Sopa Catalunya SGD16.80++
A three-in-one clear savoury medium bodied broth of soft pork, beef and chicken.
Ensalada Colores SGD18.80++
Crunchy shredded fresh lettuce, onion, and tomatoes topped with olives and drizzled with sour cream. Served on a large crispy tortilla.
Bacon Esparrago SGD16.80++
Baked fresh crunchy juicy baby asparagus wrapped in a roll with lightly grilled bacon strips. Served with pulpy home made tomato dip, this was a savoury, refreshing appetizer.
Patatas Bravas SGD15.80++
Buttery roasted potatoes wedges in a savoury, nutty, grainy romesco and aioli (pepper and almond) sauce with subtle spicy hints.
Croquetas SGD16.80.
Home made chicken croquette. Crispy balls filled with flavourful, savoury, creamy, soft pulled chicken slivers.
Lengua Ternera SGD22.80++
Thick beef tongue char grilled till tender and served with Spanish sweet wine sauce. Marvellously savoury sweet, tender slightly grainy flesh (almost like liver in texture).
Honey BBQ Ribs SGD48.80++
The tender juicy savoury sweet grilled ribs was slightly caramelised outside while inside, the moist and soft flesh fell off the bone easily. Serenity's home made BBQ sauce does not have the taste of bottled sauces used in average restaurants.
Codillo de Cerdo SGD48++
Baked pork knuckle, ultra crispy outside while inside it was still moist and tender.
One of the best pork knuckles I have eaten so far. The meat was savoury without being overly salty and it was just the right tenderness.
Serenity's signature crispy Spanish suckling pig SGD308++
Jerry expertly chopping up the suckling pig with the blunt edge of a ceramic plate. We can hear the breaking and crackling of crispy golden brown skin as Jerry cut up the whole piglet with ease in under 20 seconds.
After the suckling pig was cut, it is Spanish custom to smash the plate for good luck. Our group "volunteered" me for the task and I gladly accepted the honour.
It wasn't hard. Just gently drop the plate directly on to the stones in the wooden bin and "praang!" the plate shatters loudly like a burst of fireworks 落地开花.
Good luck, everyone!
The paper thin skin of the suckling pig was crispy like crackers (not chewy). The meat was tender and fine like roast chicken. The soft moist fibres were rich with savoury juices and natural flavours.
It was like eating good roast chicken with richer, more intense flavours.
One of the best roast suckling pig that I have tasted anywhere, so far. (Reminds me of lechon in The Philippines.)
Paella Valenciana SGD68++
Paella Arroz Negro SGD68++
Classic Spanish staple made with Spanish rice grains cooked with fresh seafood and vegetables. The Spanish rice grains cooked in seafood broth till slightly soft, soaked up the flavours from the seafood very well. We had both the saffron and squid ink paellas which we enjoyed very much.
Churros SGD12.80++
The crispiest, non greasy home made Spanish style fried crullers eaten with syrupy molten bitter sweet chocolate.
Hard to stop, once you get going.
La Pina Gazpacho SGD12.80++.
Tissue thin sliced fresh pineapple sweetened with Spanish sweet wine and topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and mint leaf.
Peras de Vino Tinto SGD16.80++
Pear poached in red wine and served with strawberries, vanilla ice cream, mint leaf and crushed nuts.
I was way past full but somehow found space in my stomach for this addictive sweet and tangy juicy jelly saturated with citrusy rosy wine.
Sangria de Tinto (SGD16++) and Sangria de Blanco (SGD16++).
Refreshing fruity Spanish cocktail of wine, fresh cut fruits, soda and ice.
I had both. The liquor packed a slight punch and turned my face red. Most people prefer the red one (Tinto) which is sweeter.
Besides scrumptious, fine Spanish cuisine, Serenity also has Singapore's largest collection of Spanish liquor and wines.
Jerry was showing us the ultra luxury 100 year old Casajuana brandy, available in Singapore only in Serenity.
Overall, I found Serenity's Spanish fare delicious and the flavours easy to like, even for people new to Spanish cuisine. Personally, I appreciate Serenity's emphasis on fresh ingredients, and skillful, meticulous preparation of the dishes. The cosy yet elegant ambiance, and gracious service added to our enjoyment.
Thank you Pin for the invite and hospitality.
