Joe's Pizza | 7 Carmine Street, NYC, New York (near the junction of 6th Avenue and Bleecker Street) ⏰10am to 4am ☏ (212) 366-1182 |
Joe's Pizza in Greenwich Village is a famous pizza shop (founded 1975) that serves pizzas NYC style by the slice (as well as pies, of course).
In the 2004 movie Spider-Man 2, when he is not saving the world, Spider-Man is a delivery man for Joe's Pizza :-D
Despite its Spider-Man fame, the original Joe's Pizza is still very much a friendly neighbourhood food stop. Regulars pop in all the time while occasionally, a flock of tourists troop in as part of guided "food tours".
(Now Joe's Pizza have many outlets, this article is about the original location feature in Spider-Man 2.)
A real New York City breakfast / brunch. A slice of pizza, soda (usually root beer) and newspaper on a ledge (yeah, this was still early social media days in 2014).
There are only a handful of stools in the tiny shop, so most customers eat standing around cocktail tables and ledges.
Joe's Pizza have many regulars coming back for many reasons. I will be back for this thin crispy crust.
The dough is flipped at the premise, several hundred times a day.
A hot pizza fresh out of the electric oven straight to waiting customers.
Another customer's Sicilian Square; his third slice here this morning.
Another customer's slice with pepperoni.
My slice with tomato sauce and fresh mozzarella served on a paper plate for USD3.50 (2014 price). I like simple pizzas like this sort of "Margherita-minus".
Folding it like a good New Yorker. I could hear the bread creaked and snapped as I folded the slice.
View of the last bite before I ate it.
The crust was nicely crispy while the cheese and tomato topping were thin and slightly dry, which is easily remedied with additional toppings ;-D Flavour was a tasty balance of mildly savoury and sweet.
Basic, simple, no frills but just perfect for a tasty convenient meal-on-the-go for the go-getting New York City lifestyle.
Joe's Pizza regular John enjoying his slice.
George eating his slice, the New York way.
The plastic bottles of condiments like dried chili flakes and dried oregano which customers can help themselves to.
