In New York City, the custom is to eat Bagels halved and sandwiching smoked meat and creamy cheese spread.
When it comes to bagels in New York City, the 100 year old Russ & Daughters is at the top of most New Yorkers' minds.
Inside Russ & Daughters, it's bright and cheery like any contemporary deli in NYC except for some old photos reminding us of the venerable shop's illustrious past.
When you step into Russ & Daughters, remember to take a number slip from the bright red dispenser near the door.
Russ & Daughters is a take away, so that are no seats inside.
That's OK.
The century old custom is to enjoy Russ & Daughters bagels on the side walk ;-D
So, when in NYC, enjoy doing as New Yorkers do.
Russ & Daughters stock premium smoked salmon from around the world.
The very helpful staff asked me how I like my smoked salmon. I asked for "oily" and he gave me Classic Scottish. Here, he is skilfully preparing my bagel sandwich.
My bagel neatly wrapped in Russ & Daughters wax paper in a brown paper bag.
My beautiful bagel unwrapped. USD13.07 after tax.
My sesame bagel with oily cut of classic Scottish smoked salmon and cream cheese with scallions.
The sesame bagel bread was quite stiff, dense and chewy with little flavour except for hints of salt.
The cream cheese was smooth and slightly savoury sweet. The bits of scallion punctuated the spread with interesting herbal flavours.
The thin slices of smoked salmon was marvellous.
The salmon tasted refreshingly savoury sweet and was totally unlike average smoked salmon which usually tastes heavily salted. The texture was like a slice of cut grapefruit and was not mushy at all (which is how average smoked salmon felt to me).
The bagel sandwich wasn't big but was sufficiently filling for me. The lovely smoked salmon and cream cheese more than made up for the
A staff preparing another customer's smoked Whitefish. I would like to try this too :-D
Next time, I shall try bagel and smoked salmon along with toppings of tomato, capers and smoked fish roe.
