There are many regional variations of the well loved fried rice noodle dish, char kway teow. Of all the regional varieties, the Penang style seems to be the best travelled - it is found all over Malaysia, Singapore and even around the world. In Johor Bahru, one of the most popular Penang char kway teow stalls is at Leong Seng Huat 两成发 coffee shop in Taman Perling.

Ah Keong, whose family hails from Penang runs the char kway teow stall founded by his dad. Ah Keong was extremely busy this Saturday morning, but he still obliged me for a quick photo of him in action.

I waited over 30 minutes for my plate of Penang char kway teow 檳城炒粿條 as there were lots of people waiting.

Ah Keong could speed things up by frying in bulk but I am glad that he kept to frying his char kway teow in small portions only. I rather wait a while longer than eat mass produced, short cut char kway teow.

The fried kway teow was relatively dry and not too oily which is true to the Penang style. The main flavour is a mild savouriness from a soy sauce and fish sauce blend. There was also a slight spiciness as I had asked for chili sauce in my CKT. The thin rice noodles (kway teow) were tender and bouncy. The bean sprouts were crunchy and juicy.

Gas fired, wok hei wasn't pronounced and I couldn't detect any lard in this fried kway teow. Chicken egg is used (instead of duck egg).

I asked for extra fresh blood cockles, so my plate of char kway teow came to RM6.

  1. Hi Tony,

I'm looking to plan a short impromptu family vacation this week. Can you recommend a good district in JB to stay in? With regards to food and heritage.

  2. The stall has moved. No more at this coffeeshop. The coffeeshop assistant says they have moved to Impian Emas. Anyone know exactly where? Miss this version of Penang CKT.
