1, Jalan Keembong 32, Taman Johor。 拜六礼拜 10:00am - 6:00pm 开罢了。
Update: They have moved to a shop lot at 9, Jalan Teratai 4, Johor Jaya. Opens 10:00am - 6:00pm (Mon off).
The Bong sisters who hail from Balik Pulau (Penang) prepare and cook everything themselves here in their home kitchen. This is as close to home cooking as you could get. Wrong. This is home cooking. Period.
We started with two small bowls of Penang laksa, which is actually Nyonya asam laksa (RM5 for each small bowl).
The base stock is made by boiling ikan kembung (small mackerel fish) in water. When cooked, the ikan kembung is deboned, diced and put back into the boiling broth to give it body.
The fish broth is further flavoured by hot spices which give it a mild, layered spicy sting, flavour and spice aromas.
There are also asam geluger slices which give Penang laksa it's signature mild tanginess.
Chili padi, torch ginger flower, shallots (not onion), peppermint, lettuce, cucumber and pineapple are added to the bowl before finishing and serving.
A squeeze of fermented prawn sauce (hae ko) is added to taste. 黄家 uses a good quality savoury sweet prawn paste with a nice aroma which they bring in from Penang. This is different from typical average quality fermented prawn sauce which tends to be overly salty or even smells bad.
As you can see, a lot goes into each bowl of good Penang asam laksa. It's probably the most elaborate dish RM5 can buy in JB.
Notice the three bowls? This was our third bowl this morning hehehe 😋
When you are at 黄家住家正宗槟城 Laksa remember to try their fully loaded Nyonya bubur cha cha. There's sweet potato, yam, sago, black-eye peas, tapioca flour jelly and more in the fresh creamy coconut milk sweetened with gula Melaka.
It's the best bubur cha cha that I have tasted and for RM3 a bowl... Wow..
Must tabao lo... (take away costs RM5).
The Nyonya bubur cha cha is Ms Anna Bong's family heirloom recipe.
When it is available, remember to tabao a tub (RM5) or two of 黄家's pickled mangoes. The crunchy mango is sourish sweet.
The mangoes are from this large tree just outside the 黄家 family home.
👍 Take your time to enjoy the authentic Penang asam laksa and bo bo cha at the 黄家 family home. It's probably the most exquisitely delicious food you can buy for RM5 and RM3 respectively in Johor Bahru. Must Try.

Hi!Is this pork free?
ReplyDeleteI have to double check with them.
DeleteThe broth packs a powerful punch. But once you add in prawn paste it loses its zest cause it taste a little bit sweet. I love as it is minus the paste. They also seem to serve fried chicken and rice vermicelli. Will try it out the next time round.
ReplyDeleteOMG the Laksa looks nice! I should go try this one !!
ReplyDeleteThe laksa iis really good and the bo bo cha cha. However the fried chicken and the mango slice is not up to my expectation.
ReplyDeleteWould like to check if they open weekdays (monday to friday) too? Or only available on saturday and sunday?
ReplyDeleteThey are opened only on weekends.
DeleteTotally enjoyed lunch yesterday at this place. Tried the assam laksa, fried chicken and bo bo cha cha. The laksa had a very distinct fragrance and the bo bo cha cha was a good touch to end the meal. Will try the mango next time.
