Met up with my KL buddy Win and she brought us to one of her favourite haunts Restoran Siu Siu 小小飯店. Siu Siu is at Jalan Syed Putra Kiri, a stone's throw from Tian How Temple at Robson Height.
Actually, I passed Jalan Robson hundreds of times before and never knew that there is such a nice restaurant up Jalan Syed Putra Kiri.
Well, restaurants like this nestled in lush greenery is not rare in Malaysia, but Siu Siu is right at the edge of bustling Kuala Lumpur, just a couple of kilometres from the buzz of Mid Valley MegaMall and Bangsar.
Win was raving about Siu Siu's famous char siew but they were all sold out 😢 So, we ordered the Red Wine Pork Ribs.
The Red Wine Pork Ribs 紅酒排骨 (RM4 per piece) were good.....! The large stubby pieces of tender juicy meat have a good firm chew to the bite. The flavours were savoury sweet with a slight hint of cooking wine. Must order this when you are at Siu Siu.
This kam heong la la 金香拉拉 (RM20) was disappointing. The shell fish was not all ocean fresh, the meat cooked a bit stiff and the robust savoury spicy sauce overwhelms what little flavour there was in the chewy meat.
This fat tilapia 紅非洲 was about a foot long, it's the largest tilapia that I have ever eaten (RM34). Those that I tried before were always just the size of my palm or slightly bigger.
The steamed fish was smothered in a thick blanket of sweet sauce with slight sour and spicy notes. The sweet thick tender flesh gave the dish another layer of sweetness. There was no muddy or fishy taste in the tender flesh at all, just sweetness.
I will order this dish again. In fact, I want to try all the fish dishes at Siu Siu. I sense that they are good at that.
Kai Lan done two ways (RM15).
The stubby stems and the leaves separated, and cooked differently. The stems are served topped by the leaves and a sprinkle of fried white bait.
The crunchy stems were OK but the leaves are a little overdone for my taste buds.
Fried pancake with ginkgo paste RM10. Very pleasant and delicious sweet dessert that is not overly sugary nor greasy.
Saw this steamed fish dish at the next table beside us. I couldn't resist hopping over to snap a picture of this. Gloriously gorgeous, no?
The lady boss showed us the tank of their signature live river fish. I couldn't resist dipping my waterproof camera into the tank to snap this shot 😱
I want to come back to try this fish (and, of course, Siu Siu's char siew).
On the way out, we stumbled upon the fish truck delivering live fish to Siu Siu.
Thank you Win for the delicious treat and for introducing us to this little gem in the city. We will definitely be back to try more dishes.
👍 Skip that generic shopping mall restaurant, get a good tasty meal with a nice rustic rural Malaysia ambiance at reasonable prices right in the bustling city 😀
