Today, we followed Daniel Chong's post in 吃的平台 foodie group to 1 Jalan Inang 1 in Skudai for this little hidden gem serving home cooked style comfort food. We love it and shall be back for more mama style food at Auntie Lian's stall.
1, Jalan Inang 1。早市。
Actually, we drove pass this decrepit looking "Restoran Atson" which is really a laid back sleepy kopitiam dozens of times in the back streets behind Jalan Skudai (near the MBJBT building). If not for Daniel Chong's sharing, we would have passed here many more times without knowing that there is good food here. Thank you Daniel for sharing 😄
Auntie Lian has been working at this little zi char stall for over twenty years which she now owns with a few of her friends/ co-workers/ partners.
When we asked what type of food does her stall serve, Auntie Lian replied "妈妈的菜 Mama's cooking". Indeed, at her stall Auntie Lian cooks for her customers like everybody's mum.
As I love la la 啦啦 (Venus clams), we ordered this la la with fried bee hoon.
The la la were great. Though not big, there were plenty, very fresh, meaty, tender, and sweet.
Every single la la we had today was good. All clean, not a grain of sand, all fresh because Auntie Lian and her partners select their la la one by one for cooking. Just like our loving mums would.
The bee hoon was fried in a simple savoury sweet soy based sauce. The bee hoon had the right texture for me. The sauce was mildly flavoured leaving the la la to star in this dish.
To go with the la la bee hoon, we had a large bowl of chicken cooked in rice wine broth 黄酒鸡.
The soupy broth was heavily laced with sweet sourish rice wine with mild spiciness from julienned ginger. A bit greasy.
There were many large chunks of chicken cooked till tender with a bit of chew to the bite. The chicken was fresh and sweet.
Total bill for all the food we had, la la bee hoon and chicken soup came to RM30.
We enjoyed our simple meal and the jovial banter with Auntie Lian and her friendly co-workers.
Next time, we shall be back for Auntie Lian's la la in rice wine, a fried or sauteed fish dish and a vegetable dish (like fried bitter gourd with eggs).
👍 Gritty little stall in a pass-by back street where you can enjoy mom's cooking. If you are visiting from overseas and want to know what local Chinese families typically eat at home, you can try it out here.
