Sin Kee Famous Cantonese Chicken Rice is run by Benson, one of the sons of the founder of the original Sin Kee at Margaret Drive food centre (now demolished). Benson is a master in chopper skills 刀功 and cuts the chicken in bold large chunks. I like my chicken chunky as it retains the most juices in the meat.
Eight of us, we ordered 3 half chicken to share. (Actually, we wanted 2 whole birds plus innards, but don't know why buddy ordered just 1.5 birds 😂 Innards were also sold out.)
One bite into this chunk of chicken and I muttered out woo....oo in pleasure. The meat was tender, smooth and juicy, and it was wet oozing with natural chicky sweetness. I like it that the chicken is cooked through and yet it is so tender and juicy. (Nowadays, I avoid chicken done pink.)
Some in our group didn't find the chicken from their plates so alluring and started to taste those from my plate. They agreed that the chicken on my plate tastes great, though they were less enthusiastic about those on their own plates which they said were drier and less flavourful 🤷
Sin Kee's dressing sauce is light - a blend of soy sauce, sesame oil and peanut oil. I like its flavour and aroma, and that it is gentle enough to allow us to taste the natural chicky flavour and sweetness. In fact, it complements the bird's natural tastes - love this sauce much.
There were a few wooo....s and ahh....s as we smelled the nice chicky aroma when the staff was handing out the plates of rice we ordered.
The chicky aroma and mildly savoury flavour were good. The rice was also not overly greasy but it was done slightly too soft and wet today. A significant portion of the rice grains were also chipped rice.
I like the watery ginger sauce for its light, gentle ginger type of spiciness and the underlying subtle savouriness, perhaps from chicken stock. The chili sauce was watery and tastes vinegary, so I didn't use it. I didn't taste the black sauce either. Main reason is, the chicken tastes so good on its own that I didn't need any condiments, really.
There was no soup served as per Sin Kee's tradition - all the chicken broth went into boiling the chicken rice.
Eh.... buddy, didn't we agree to have two whole birds....? Now, we have not enough.... I ate that last boney piece right after taking this picture. The only piece we didn't eat was that pointy wing tip 😂
Pricing is at a slight premium at SGD28 a bird and rice at SGD0.80 per standard rice bowl (2016 price).
3-Star I like Sin Kee Famous Cantonese Chicken because I love chunky chicken that is smooth, tender and juicy, and have a nice gentle chicky sweetness. I also like it that the dressing sauce is light yet flavoursome and aromatic. The condiments are average and the rice on the wet-soft side. This would be my choice for chicken rice, when I am in the Buona Vista area.

Sin Kee is more famous for its soya sauce chicken. I am surprise he didn't make it anymore.
ReplyDeleteI see. Actually, I cannot really remember the food I had much, even though I've been to the old Sin Kee several times. I remember the people I am with, and also the crunchy chicken intestines. I also remember the auntie who sold soup which - we always buy from her as Sin Kee doesn't serve soup. I wonder where the auntie today.
DeleteNo soup? That's a big minus.
