We went to Jay Bee Garden restaurant J.B. 園咖哩鱼头小食馆 in Skudai Baru this evening after a long day signing and personalising over 400 copies of Johor Kaki guide to Find Dining in JB 😃 It's one of the first places I think of when I want home cooked style, comfort dishes for family and casual get togethers at reasonable prices.
It's the usual Sunday dinner scene at Jay Bee Garden - many families and friendly get togethers. Inside the bare bones, simple busy little shoplot, it's buzzing with chatter and banter.
Jay Bee Garden is one of the 100 popular JB eateries featured in Find Dining with Johor Kaki book. As we have 6
Almost every table ordered Jay Bee Garden's popular curry fish head (RM39 2016 price). Fresh Ikan Merah (not lower grade fish like Jenahak or farm raised Sea Bass).
Generous amounts of fresh tender fish meat with lots of gelatin on the fish's pink face and between the bone crevices. The curry was very slightly on the salty side with lots of spices but with only a very mild chili sting. Lots of crunchy fresh sweet vegetables like cabbage, brinjal and lady's fingers in the pot. There's also a couple of pieces of spongy taupok and crispy savoury fish crackers.
Nicely done Fried Fish at RM27 (2016 price) a serving.
The thick fish meat was fried to golden brown with a slight crisp outside. The white flesh inside was moist and tender with a slight fresh fish taste. The large piece of fish sat on a shallow pool of light soy sauce and oil. It was topped with julienned ginger fried to a crisp.
Sweet and Sour Pork RM10 (2016 price).
Little pieces of lightly battered lean pork were fried till crispy then tossed in a quite robust savoury sweet sour gooey sauce. Well loved especially by children.
Onion Fried Egg RM5 (2016 price).
Simple onion filled omelette. Sweet, savoury and eggy. Soft with juicy crunch inside. Every table orders this 😋 The best omelette RM5 can buy.
Fried Meat Roll (RM8 for 2 x half foot rolls).
Very reasonably priced but not much flavour in this roll of prawn and water chestnuts wrapped in crispy bean curd skin.
Kau Ki Cai 九杞菜 or Boxthorn Leaves (leafy greens) in egg drop soup RM12. I love fresh kau ki cai any way it is done 😋
The total bill for our meal with rice and drinks came to RM117 (GST included).
I think this is very reasonable for 6 adults 😄
I peeped into the frenetic kitchen and am very glad to meet owner chef Rose again. Needless to say, she was extremely busy dishing out dish after dish to dozens of waiting customers.
Also glad to meet Xiao Wei again - she is the lady behind that delicious curry fish head we eat at Jay Bee Garden. Just look at how fresh and meaty that Ikan Merah head was.
Rose and Xiao Wei were happy that Jay Bee Garden is one of the 100 eateries in the Find Dining with Johor Kaki guide 😄
Presenting Rose's son Johnson a copy of Find Dining with Johor Kaki 😄
4-Star (out of 5). Many tasty home style dishes at Jay Bee Garden family restaurant at very reasonable prices. Literally mum's cooking by Auntie Rose. The fresh ingredients hand picked at the wet market are skilfully prepared by Rose and Xiao Wei.
I first visited Jay Bee Garden in 2012. Not much have changed since my first visit - the food is as good as ever 👈 click
