Went to Taman Ungku Tun Aminah this evening and stumbled upon a newly opened curry chicken noodle stall at Restoran Yee Chia Ren
Jalan Temenggong 11.
I like this section of Taman Ungku Tun Aminah as it has many night time hawker stalls and is always full of buzz. Local folks gather at the several bustling coffee shops along Jalan Temenggong 11 for affordable meals and get togethers with family and friends. Car parking is havoc, so we usually park a short walk away.
While hawker stall crawling along Jalan Temenggong 11, I spotted A1 Curry Mee stall A1咖喱面 serving curry chicken noodle. I decided to bet my calories on it. I love curry chicken noodles and there ain't too many stalls in Johor or Singapore selling this.
Uncle Miow has been a hawker for 30 years and just started A1 curry chicken noodle stall three weeks ago. Uncle Miow's 3 week old stall already has many fans and they encouraged me to try his curry chicken when I stood at the stall observing Uncle Miow at work.
First, I tried this "dry" version recommended by one of Uncle Miow's regular customers (RM5). It's noodles (I opted for kway teow) and chicken meat smothered by a creamy coat of "curry head" 咖喱头. "Curry head" is extra creamy as it is skimmed off the top of the pot of curry.
I like Uncle Miow's chicken meat - we can choose either wing, leg or breast meat - I opted for the leg because of it's meatiness and juiciness.
Uncle Miow's chicken is good. It is tender, juicy and has that chicky taste which I like. The chicken leg is served deboned (I prefer my chicken leg served as a drumstick with bone in).
I like Uncle Miow's curry but there was just too little of it in this "dry" version. I don't really like this over creamy "curry head" version.
So, I made up for it by ordering a regular curry chicken noodle as I love the chicken (RM5).
The curry has medium body with coconut milk. It is mildly spicy with a savoury base from chicken stock and spices. There is a trace of sweetness from the fresh coconut milk. Visible grease from oil used to fry the spices. I drank up all the curry because it is so tasty (even though it is loaded with cholesterol 😱).
After trying the "dry" version and the regular version with deboned drumstick, I think this would be my favourite - regular curry with chicken wing. This should give the best combination of bone, tender meat and skin for me 😋
3-Star (out of 5). Humble little stall in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah serves a nice simple curry chicken noodle. Juicy tender poached chicken with natural chicky flavour. Tasty mildly spicy curry broth with underlying chicken stock sweetened with coconut milk.
