Richly flavoured nasi briyani is one of my favourite indulgences. Today, we went to Koothurar Nasi Briyani at Blk 17 Beach Road for our fix. (Most people just know it affectionately as "the Beach Road nasi briyani" as there is no signboard, the best at Beach Road and many say the whole of Singapore.)
Koothurar's nasi briyani is available only on Fri, Sat and Sun from 11:00am till sold out (usually around 1:30pm). When we arrived at just after 11:00am on Sunday, there was already a long queue at Koothurar Nasi Briyani. [Update: Nasi briyani is now available daily.]
Bala, a retired police officer who was in the queue with us told us that he has been eating Koothurar nasi briyani for 50 years since they started at Sultan road, then moved to Beach road, before settling at the block 17 coffee shop. Koothurar Nasi Briyani is run by second generation owners now.
Four of us ordered 2 plates of nasi briyani with chicken and 1 plate with mutton to share. We wanted another plate with fish but it was not available yet when we reached the front of the queue.
My friend PS Yap couldn't remember how much he paid for these except that it was very reasonably priced 😂 I did recall Bala mentioned that it's SGD5.50 per set. [Update: 2020 price is $7 per set.] The papadum is sold separately.
Mutton is my first choice when it comes to nasi briyani.
The mutton was deeply infused with spices making it taste like gentle perfume with a slight lamb gaminess i.e. perfect. The tender meat was juicy and I was diligently digging out every tasty shred buried inside the bone crevices.
The rice was the basmati long grain type. The grains were tender and fluffy with just a light coat of grease (ghee) and spice. It's relatively light, flavoursome and aromatic - mixed with mild curry masala, I was able to finish everything on my plate, plus a few spoonfuls from the plates of the others 😄
The chicken briyani comes with basmati rice, smothered in curry masala and served with a large piece of chicken and a small clump of achar (pickled cucumber, carrot etc).
The huge piece of chicken breast was tender and moist, infused very gently with spices and still has that subtle nice natural chicky flavour. Love it.
Burp.. burp.. we enjoyed ourselves very muchie 😋

Yess.. I stay ard this area n have recommended dis shop to a lotsa my office kawan n dey love d bryani here. Side note: bryani is available everyday. Shop closed alt tuesdays. Less know tip: their fish bryani is even more solid plus their daily chqnging menu for white rice and curry of the day is also excellent!!
ReplyDeleteJust tried it today for takeaway. Rice & meat taste good but it was served with a hard-boiled egg instead of achar (which I find it weird). A bit disappointed as I've heard a lot of positive feedbacks about this stall. I won't specifically go there to queue next time. I've tasted briyani at other places which are comparable in taste.
