Rol San. Famous Dim Sum. Spadina Ave, Toronto Chinatown. 龙笙栈
First meal in Toronto after 30 hours flying from Singapore was dim sum at Rol San Restaurant in Chinatown, because dim sum was my most memorable meal when I was last in Toronto nearly 30 years ago. I couldn't locate the restaurant that left such a deep dim sum impression on me, so we settled for one of the reigning local favourites Rol San on Spadina Avenue. I wasn't looking for Rol San at first.
Tiong Hokkien Mee. Damansara Uptown 新青山福建面
One evening in Kuala Lumpur, we were craving KL style Hokkien mee - actually, we crave KL Hokkien mee everyday we are here 😂 But, we were deterred by the legendary KL rush hour traffic and dared not drive downtown to Kim Lian Kee (Petaling Street) or Mun Wah (Jalan Maharajalela) for our long time favourites.
What? Hakka Mee Hoon Kueh? Restoran Xin Shi Ji Court 新世紀餐館 ⭐⭐⭐⭐✱
You know, few people would dispute that Tow Kee 滔记 in Seremban is the best Hakka mee there is in Malaysia. When the two Tow Kee outlets closed temporarily early this year, we asked Seremban locals where else do they get their Hakka mee fix. Many of them pointed us to a little no name stall in Xin Shi Ji Court coffee shop.
Leong Wei Roasted Delight @ Holland Drive Food Centre • Cheap & Good 良伟腊味饭
During my past life, I like attending courses at the Singapore Civil Service College - it lets me get away from work for a few days 😃 and also lets me have a chance to lunch at Holland Drive hawker centre 😋 which is just steps away.
There are plenty of choices at Holland Drive hawker centre, but most of the time, I just ended up with "set lunch" at Leong Wei Roasted Delight. Since I was in the area today, I dropped in on my favourite old haunt.

Moons Cafe Family Restaurant. Good Food Impian Emas & Southkey Johor Bahru 满满
Thanks to Puan Chong's recommendation, I came to know about Moons Cafe in Taman Impian Emas in Skudai. Moons Cafe is a warm, family run eatery popular with local residents of all communities but is a little under the social media radar so far. In 2019, Moons Cafe opened a second outlet in Southkey, Johor Bahru (update: Moons Southkey has closed).

You know the feeling - you are far away from home and you pine for the flavours and aromas of home. It need not be anything exquisite or exclusive - just commonplace everyday things we take for granted which are hard to find once we are out of the country. It could be as simple as a condiment, an oil, a soy sauce, a cheese, Vegemite, Marmite, a drink, you get the idea. You would gladly pay
Kentucky Fried Chicken KFC Stulang Laut in Johor Bahru JB
You know right? You might have heard people say that KFC in Malaysia tastes better than KFC in Singapore. I don't know lah.... I haven't tasted KFC in Singapore for decades. And, the only way to know for sure is to do a blind test of both Malaysia and Singapore KFC together. I am not going to do that now 😂
