Kwong Hup Cafe Lei Cha in Kuching 廣合茶餐室 双香擂茶

On our way from Kuching to Lundu, we needed a breakfast stop. SP's friend suggested lei cha or so-called thunder tea at Kwong Hup Cafe 廣合茶餐室. I was glad to go along as lei cha is one of my favourite comfort dishes, as it is so rich in flavours and tradition.

Kwong Hup Cafe is the typical Malaysian corner coffee shop where locals go for their daily meals and coffee. They have various food stalls, all traditional staples like porridge, noodles (kolo mee), laksa, lei cha, spring rolls, fried kway teow, kueh kueh, etc. Nothing fanciful but all are nice.

Headed straight for the lei cha stall - we are very serious bloggers 🤭🤣 It is called 双香擂茶 literally Double Happiness Lei Cha.

Stall holder was chopping up the fresh vegetables for the lei cha. It's a dish made up of different vegetables with rice, peanut and tofu, etc.

At 双香擂茶 the vegetables were so fresh, the stallholder was stripping the leaves from the stem. There was a spider playing hide and seek between the leaves - that means the leaves were not saturated with insecticides 👍

Asked friendly stallholder to pause for a quick picture 🤭

A simple, humble coffee shop hawker stall but so much pride in turning out a good product.

Three of us, first round at Kwong Hup Cafe. Second breakfast this morning 🤭

Over the boiled white rice (option of brown rice as well), a thick blanket of nuts, preserved vegetables, stir fried vegetables, long beans, diced tofu, etc.

The green tea made by boiling a blend of vegetables and herbs.

I drown the rice and ingredients in the green vegetables and herbs tea. Then, ate the green salty tasting tea with mouthfuls of rice and ingredients.

I love the myriad textures and flavours from the many ingredients in lei cha. 双香擂茶 serves a delicious lei cha of fresh ingredients and in a generous portion.

Walking around Kwong Hup Cafe, the popiah stall also caught my eye.

Gave it a try. It was a generous thick serving, loaded with ingredients like stewed maung kwang, crushed peanuts, etc. It was a little wet and mild, flat tasting for my liking.
