I was invited to taste the Friday night Italian buffet at Oasis Restaurant in Thistle Hotel Johor Bahru.



We can enjoy poolside dinning on cool breezy nights.

Or, we can opt for the Oasis' well appointed interior.



The appetisers, mains and desserts are presented buffet style. In addition, we can also have make-to-order pasta and pizza a la carte style.



Appetisers and sides include cheese platters, grilled zucchini, smoked salmon and more. Condiments include various pickles, dressings, comfit and oils.

The tender, juicy and richly flavoursome slice of lamb shoulder was served with a choice of Rosemary, garlic and mint sauce. I like this delicious lamb.

Roasted Tenderloin Beef with Shallot Reduction.



I like this Chicken Picata with Tomato Salsa. The meaty chunks of tender flavoursome chicken thigh were wrapped in eggy batter and mildly savoury Parmesan cheese. Pan seared and baked. Yums!

There's a lot to choose from but my tummy only had space left for a few sweet nibbles. I am jealous of those petite ladies who have dessert stomachs.

Azuandy, one of the partners at Chicken Rice Pit Stop invited me to visit his restaurant in Plentong, Johor. Chicken Rice Pit Stop is run by a youthful, enthusiastic and enterprising team. 



Chicken Rice Pit Stop is a simple, comfortable eatery serving a wide range of traditional local as well as Western style dishes, all at affordable prices.

Today, I saw customers from the factories at Pasir Gudang, families living in the Plentong/ Masai area and large groups of school children. There is something for everyone's taste buds.



Grilled beef served with nasi bryani and house made brown sauce.



Ayam masak merah with nasi briyani.



Grilled New Zealand lamb with mashed potato and broccoli splashed with house made brown sauce RM14.90.



Grilled chicken with French fries and sweet corn dressed with house made brown sauce RM8.90.




Grilled Norwegian salmon served with sweet corn, French fries, and lemon oil sauce RM13.90.




On Fridays, CRPS serves kambing golek and kambing bakar (barbecue lamb) with nasi briyani.



Chicken Rice Pit Stop is a good place for family outings or parties as there is something for everyone and the prices are very affordable.

MyOri Malaysia Penang Green Curry Rice Vermicelli JK1143 檳城青綠咖哩米粉

Disclosure: MyOri from Penang, Malaysia sent me this Penang Green Curry Rice Vermicelli for tasting and comment. No remuneration is received for this or any food post, in line with Johor Kaki invited food tasting policy.



Just when we thought that the Penang White Curry instant noodles craze has finally came and gone, MyOri comes in with this Penang Green Curry.

There is something about green curry that appeals to me. Whenever I am in a Thai restaurant, I will order a green curry dish. I like the aroma, flavours and looks of green curry.



Tearing open the MyOri package, there is a block of dried rice vermicelli (bee hoon), a sachet of green curry paste and a sachet of seasoning powder.



The dried rice vermicelli 米粉 was very fine and brittle. The packaging was done well, so there were very few broken strands.

The green curry paste is made with a blend of shallot, garlic, curry powder, spices and prawn paste. Whereas most other curry paste are soaked in oil, MyOri's green curry paste was just moist.

My bowl of Penang Green Curry Rice Vermicelli was ready in 3 minutes, following the simple instructions on the packet to the letter. Actually just drop the bee hoon into boiling water, stir, add in the green curry paste and seasoning powder, stir again - and presto.

The aroma of green curry and spice filled the kitchen when I stirred the green curry paste into the pot of boiling water.



The slightly yellow green coloured broth has a good round body. The broth was slightly savoury, sweet and quite spicy. It felt smooth with some fine grittiness from the ground spice ingredients.

The green curry broth was more than mildly spicy but not by too much. The spiciness filled the entire mouth, waking up all the taste buds with a pleasant hot zing that lingered for several seconds in the mouth.

The sensation is quite addictive and I found myself scooping up another spoonful to get that mild (for my tolerance level) spicy sting.

The spiciness was balanced by crustacean savouriness from the prawn paste/ anchovy powder and sweetness, presumably from sugar.



The fine strands of bee hoon have a soft el dente bite. I liked the texture a lot.

It's a good idea to use rice vermicelli instead of the usual wheat noodles as the fine bee hoon does a better job in picking up the flavourful curry broth.



And now, the signature Johor Kaki dip stick test.



MyOri Malaysia Penang Green Curry Rice Vermicelli did well in the dip stick test. There was little grease stuck to the dip stick.

Many friends advised me never to drink up all the instant broth from a packet of instant noodles ..... too much MSG and synthetic flavourings. I realised that I just did that because the tasty green curry broth was delicious without being too greasy. 

With Malaysia Penang Green Curry Rice Vermicelli, MyOri just threw in another contender into the "instant Penang curry noodles" fray with slight twists - vermicelli instead of wheat noodles, green curry instead of white/red curry.

I wonder if MyOri's green curry would renew interest in "instant Penang curry".

Nevermind.

I am happy that I can have the good green curry option for those occasions when I need to fix a snack attack quickly.



Based on the Johor Kaki standardised instant noodle rating system, MyOri Malaysia Penang Green Curry Rice Vermicelli is rated 7.5/10.

Updated 29 May 2019. The area around Cheras KL was one of my old haunts for street food and the massive pasar malam at Taman Connaught during my cherished days in KL (over 10 years ago).

Our friend Desmond brought us to Restoran Yulek which is his favourite wantan mee shop in KL. According to Desmond, Yulek's char siew 叉烧 and siew yok 烧肉 (sio bak) are legends.

When I was working in Kuala Lumpur over 10 years ago (2001), Imbi pork ball noodles 豬肉丸粉 was one of my favourite breakfasts. My then office was just a stone's throw from the corner kopitiam Win Heng Seng 永兴城茶室 along Jalan Imbi.

MUD the Musical - Our Story of Kuala Lumpur

MUD the Musical - Our Story of Kuala Lumpur is performed daily at Panggung Bandaraya (KL City Theatre). The theatre is housed in the heritage Sultan Abdul Samad Building built in 1902. The building was originally the Kuala Lumpur Sanitary Board under British Malaya. The theatre is just across Jalan Raja from Dataran Merdeka.



Since the premiere performance in Jul 2014, the audience has been growing steadily due to positive public response.



Excitement and anticipation while waiting for the show to begin. The ornately decorated theatre seats 250 people and is very comfortable.



MUD the Musical tells the story of Kuala Lumpur in a nearly hour long show about the multiracial friendship of (left to right) Meng, Mamat and Muthiah.



It all began with people congregating in Kuala Lumpur to build a better future from the tin ore buried in the muddy pools where Sungai Lumpur (now Sungai Gombak) and Sungai Kelang converge.

Many things happened - much sweat and tears were shed before the Kuala Lumpur metropolis we see today rise from the murky mud pools.



In 1881, a great fire razed the fledgling town to the ground forcing the city pioneers to rebuild Kuala Lumpur from smoking embers.



Not long after, another natural disaster swallowed and washed the newly rebuilt city away.



Won't tell you what this scene is about. Come and experience it for yourself ;-D



But, through every trial and tribulation, KLites always rise up to the occasion with unity and unflappable spirit.



It's an inspiring and uplifting story. Every set back merely sets the stage for yet another triumph of the human spirit.



I like it that the show included a few interactive segments with the audience. The appreciative audience was invited onto the stage with the artistes to join in a rousing village celebration together.

I even got one backstage picture with the friendly artistes before the show hehe :-D



I've seen MUD twice and enjoyed it every time.

The fascinating story of Kuala Lumpur was told simply - it's captivating and entertaining without any need for embellishment. The artistes were brimming with infectious, passionate energy. The singing and acting were powerful and moving. The backdrops, props and costumes were all brilliantly thought out and put together.



If you visit KL and did not see MUD the Musical, you ought to regret it ;-D

Seriously.

"Tomorrow begins today!"
