✍ 7 Dec 2024. Back to my old food hunting ground, Taman Universiti. Universiti Technologi Malaysia alumni love the unique black pepper chicken noodle here. I love it too, so it was the first place I returned to on this trip.
The corner coffee which used to be called Restoran Shang Hai is now Restoran Ong Lai.
Back in 2012 when I first started Johor Kaki I was shy and hesitant to take pictures of the stall holder, so I have no image or recollection of the owner at that time.
Today, the owners looked in their 20s or 30s.
The RM7 serving.
The noodles were done a little soft and coated with a sweet savoury sauce. There was no lard. I thought of asking for sambal but decided not to, as the pickled green chili pepper worked well with the sweet savoury sauce.
There wasn't the peppery sauce that I was craving for.
There were a few chunks of fried chicken in black sauce. The tender chewy pieces were sweet savoury, no longer the unique peppery taste (like black pepper sauce crab).
If you like sweet savoury noodle, this is for you.
Just to make sure that I ordered correctly, I asked the lady boss if there is a peppery chicken option.
She replied no, the previous uncle (original owner) used to serve that but she don't.

✍ 25 Mar 2012. Our memories are often anchored to the sights, smells, tastes, feel and even the sounds of our food. This unphotogenic but delicious “black chicken mee” in Taman Universiti is in the fond memories of many Universiti Teknologi
Restoran Shang Hai 上海 was the “black chicken mee” stall in Ong Lai coffee shop before it moved into its own large corner shop. This “black chicken mee” story is yet another one of those inspiring stall-to-shop folklore of underdog success.
Restoran Shang Hai 上海 serves wanton noodles, chicken chops, and of course their signature “black chicken mee”.
The homemade egg noodles are doused with gooey black peppery sauce and topped with pieces of baked chicken marinated with black pepper.
The chicken is marinated in black pepper sauce and then baked. The chicken meat is juicy, firm and slightly chewy. It is coated with a caramelised layer of salty, sweet and subtly peppery sauce. Nice! No wonder this is so popular with UTM students.
The noodles are the same as any good wanton noodle - heavy with eggy flavour and feels smooth and slightly crunchy.
The big difference lies in the sauce – here the noodles are coated with the same slightly salty, sweet, fragrant black pepper sauce used to prepare the chicken.

I really enjoyed this unique “black chicken noodles”.
