As an avid fan of ramen, I am always on the lookout for good ramen. So, I was excited that Washoku Explorer online marketplace just launched an instant Tonkutsu Ramen box set.

Washoku Explorer invited me to taste their instant Tonkutsu Ramen box set which is only available online at Washoku Explorer.

The contents came carefully bubble wrapped, so everything arrived in mint condition.

The pretty Washoku Explorer original ceramic donburi (ramen bowl) and plastic renge (soup spoon).

In the other bundle, (clockwise from bottom right) dried Kikurage fungus from Kumamoto Japan, Ramen noodle pack with soup (seasoning powder and oil), dried green onion from Kyoto Japan and dried seaweed from Saga Japan.

Soaking the dried Kikurage fungus in water for 30 – 40 mins according to the instructions.

Our bowl of Tonkotsu ramen made according to the instructions.

I didn't add anything as I wanted to rate this ramen just by itself. Of course, we can add chashu and tamago eggs later :-D

The tonkotsu broth has a heavy creamy smooth body but mild savoury sweet flavour. We like the flavour and felt it was better than some ramen shops. I like it too but it lacked the critical porcine flavour of freshly made tonkotsu broth. (This can be solved easily by adding our own chashu :-D )

The dried green onions added aroma to the broth. The dried Kikurage fungus gave the noodles a nice crunch. The dried crisp seaweed, in particular, was very flavoursome.

I like it that the Hakata ramen noodles have a nice bounce to the bite when cooked for 2 minutes (120 seconds) as stated in the instructions. If you like your noodles softer, cook it a little longer but I like my ramen al dente.

I rate Washoku Explorer instant Tonkutsu Ramen 7/10 based on the Johor Kaki instant noodle rating system <- click. I would have rated it higher if it costs less.

  1. Woh Tony, 有没有搞错啊 ?

I clicked on the Washoku Explorer url link you provided and it showed USD 89 ( circa RM 347 )for this Instant Tonkutsu Ramen set. This is more expensive than having Wagyu Beef :-) . I think I will pass on this !
