Popped by Mary Penang Food stall at Ah Huat coffee shop at Setia Indah (Jalan Setia 3/7) this morning. Enjoyed their Hokkien mee, white curry noodle and Hokkien lor mee.
今早到 Setia Indah, Jalan Setia 3/7 阿发咖啡厅找玛丽槟城小吃档。吃过几个招牌小吃 - 虾面, 白咖喱面, 福建卤面。感觉它们是真正的好吃。
We first ordered the basic Penang style Hokkien mee (known as Penang prawn mee in Singapore and JB) for RM5.50. First looks were pleasing - all the elements were there - little shrimps, pork slices, kang kong and an aromatic clear broth with a chili oil slick floating menacingly on top. There were extras like egg slices, fish cake slices and braised pork skin.
The prawn broth, the soul of Penang Hokkien mee is strong in this bowl. The crustacean savouriness is robust without the taste of seasoning powder - just prawny flavour.
Penangites insist on these flavoursome tiny sea shrimps for their Hokkien mee and no others will do - especially, not those big pond raised ones.
Then, there was this springy tender braised pork skin. As they say in Singapore and Malaysia, "like that, win already lo" 赢了咯.
As Mary Penang Food stall has "Penang White Curry" for RM5.50, we must of course give it a try :-D
White curry is a blend of coconut milk, evaporated milk and spices.
Stir in this sambal made with a blend of chili, galangal and buah keluak for the spicy kick, then it's all yums :-D
Good to the last drop.
We were about to leave when the boss came over to us and offered us this Hokkien Lor Mee, one of Mary Penang Food stall's signatures.
It's the same Hokkien prawn mee broth added with the starchy sauce from the lor mee. So, tada.... Hokkien Lor.
It turned out to be a nice blend with layers of savoury flavours from the prawn broth and the lor (sauce). The lor thickens the watery prawn broth giving it more body. In the future, this Hokkien Lor is something I would order, if it is available.
Stall holder Mr Yong who hails from Penang runs the stall together with his wife. The stall is named after Mr Yong's mum, Mary who still runs her own noodle stall in Penang.
