烤妖 Botak's BBQ stand at Jalan Mutiara Emas 3/1 in Mount Austin has been raging red hot in Johor Bahru for several months. I wanted to let things cool off a little before coming by, but Botak just got hotter and hotter, and I couldn't resist it any more :-D
Of course, I heard about the legendary queues and so did the Singaporean thing of waiting outside, before the shop open (at 6:30pm).
The moment the shutters were pushed apart, people, lots of people suddenly emerged from their cars.
And, I thought only Singaporeans are kiasu 怕输 :-D
Botak has a good system. Customers' orders are taken and assigned tables in an orderly, friendly manner.
Customers can sit inside (no air con). The inside was laid with simple furniture, the walls have funky geometric designs and the lighting was multicoloured cycledelic. This space must have been either a pub or internet cafe in it's past life :-D
Customers can also choose to sit street side, outside.
While we got ourselves sorted out, Botak set up and fired up his makeshift "kitchen" outside his shop.
I took a quick peek at Botak's meat and found the unique fiery looking marination.
The strips of pork belly.
The lamb chops.
Even before our seats were warm, Botak was already fully fired up at the grill, running two grills in one go.
Botak does all the grilling personally. A good grill needs all the close attention from the chef.
A lady handles the salmon which she sauté and then torch before serving.
This serving of salmon belongs to our newly made friends at the table beside us. Johoreans are friendly folks :-D
Our friendly new buddies let us taste a couple of slices. The salmon was good! Fresh and done just right so that they were tender, juicy, sweet and flavoursome.
I usually avoid salmon nowadays after tasting some stale ones, but this at Botak is a Must Try when you are here.
We also didn't order this pan seared pork dumplings. We wanted to save our tummies to focus on Botak's famous grilled food mah.
Our friendly neighbours let us try these. They were good too. Tender, slightly crisp skin wrapping flavoursome soupy minced pork.
Again, a Must Order which we didn't order today :-p
Remember to order the dumplings when you are here :-D
Finally, our serving of grilled pork belly.
The grilled pork belly was cut into broad pieces and strips, and served on waxed brown paper. You know, it's like a school pals BBQ gathering and you got a plate from your friends. Very informal and casual.
The belly pork was tender and juicy. The meat tasted savoury, sweet, peppery and had the distinct smokiness of satay. This delicious pork belly is a combination of fresh pork, great marination and Botak's grilling skill.
We love this grilled pork belly.
Our lamb chop on waxed brown paper with a token lettuce, and disposable chop sticks.
Again, great savoury peppery marination. The lamb chop was cubed and the flesh was grilled to a beautiful pink inside with a slight char outside. Savoury, sweet, peppery, smokey flavour with underlying mild lamb gaminess .
Love this lamb chop.
Our total bill for the grilled pork belly and lamb chop came to RM38.
The queue was still long and Botak was still slaving over the smoking grill when we were leaving.
->> A great grill and interesting JB experience. Just note the queue, and very casual set up and gritty serving style.
