CLOSED This curry laksa with soft shell crab keeps popping up on my Facebook and Instagram feeds recently. My foodie buddy Ong texted me to try this out. The new friends from Kulai we met this week, told us to check it out. With so many friends pointing us in that direction, we have no choice but to check out the so-called Melbourne Premium Laksa at Australia Premium Laksa in Indahpura, near Jusco in Kulai.
Jalan Kenanga 29/3, Bandar Indahpura, Kulai, Johor.
The little air conditioned eatery filled up the moment it pulled up it's shutters. It took over the space of Oscar Bistro & Cafe and was rebranded a couple of weeks ago as Australia Premium Laksa. Located a few doors away from Tea Garden at the corner.
Despite the crowd, service was orderly and quick. The youthful staff was friendly and responsive even though they were very busy.
There are a few dishes on the simple one page menu but most people were here for the Australia.Melbourne Premium Laksa - the one with the soft shell crab :-D
So we zeroed in for that too. It's a whopping RM23 per serving.
The curry laksa broth was heavy bodied and creamy. Sweet and savoury flavours dominate with slight spiciness and a bit of tanginess from the squeezed lime. The sweet savouriness was a little too robust for my taste buds but people who enjoy their curry laksa creamy sweet, savoury and slightly spicy will like this broth.
The battered and deep fried soft shell crab is the star of this "premium" laksa.
The soft shell crab was indeed spongy soft, with a slight gentle crispness from the thick deep fried batter wrapping it. The battered crab took on the flavour of the curry broth clinging to the batter. But, beneath the curry laksa there was some sweetness from the crab's soft tissue and batter.
->> Slightly too heavy and creamy in body, and too strong flavours for my liking. But, should be great for those who like robust flavours in their food.
My curiosity fully satisfied, so I don't think I will indulge in this again for a while, especially at RM23 a pop.

Looks absolutely scrumptious! I love robust flavours so this should be right down my alley :-)
ReplyDeleteSomething must have gone wrong, because I went at around 8pm on Friday and it was deserted! I was the only customer. Right from the time I arrived in the area to check out the options at 730pm, till my departure from the restaurant at 8:30pm-ish, there was not a single customer apart from me, while the nearby Tea Garden was busy with diners.
ReplyDeleteThe laksa gravy was very rich, just as you described. But somehow, it didn't taste right, coming across as a very rich curry instead of laksa. The jelak factor was high. The soft-shell crab was a disappointment. Since there was no dinner crowd, I expected the crab to be done perfectly, but no, the batter was overly thick and slightly chewy instead of crispy. Serving the crab soaked in the gravy was a mistake, as the lower half of the crab was soggy. All in all, a less than satisfying experience. Price was high for Malaysia, but would still have been worth it had it been shiok. But it wasn't. Wasted alot of calories that night. ---chriszzz
I went twice in July. Shop looks closed.
