Chai Lee chicken rice at Taman Anggerik is one of the favourites of my JB foodie buddy Jeff. "肉滑,又香 smooth and flavourful meat" Jeff says. Since I like tasty, velvety Hainanese style chicken, I quickly went and check out 财利鸡饭 :-D
The boss busy at the front. Deep fried chicken, char siew and siew yok hanging in the window. Couldn't see any poached chicken 白斩鸡 :-D
We ordered Hainanese style poached chicken as this was our first visit and we just wanted to try what Jeff recommended for now.
All these, plus drinks came to RM25.30.
Half a bird for RM18 nett. It's a big bird alright as Jeff said.
Plenty of chunky juicy flesh in the pile. The meat was cooked through without any pink i.e. blood (good news for people who are squeamish about pink meat). The meat wasn't tofu soft (that would require the flesh to have some pink). It was tender and moist with a little bite to the teeth. The leg and back portions with skin on was the smoothest and have a nice chicken flavour.
Chai Lee uses good quality soy sauce to dress their chicken - it's aroma and savoury flavour complemented the chicken's natural sweetness. The breast though still tender and moist, was slightly fibrous. We like this poached chicken and happily ate every single piece on the plate. I would come back for this, if I am in the Taman Anggerik area.
The rice grains were above average quality and well prepared, so it is aromatic, flavoursome, not overly greasy and spot on in moistness. The grains also have a good tender yet firm bite to the teeth.
Only chili sauce is available (no ginger sauce) but this was very good. The chili was blended a little fine but it is melded with ginger and a savoury stock etc resulting in a well balanced flavoursome tangy, spicy hot, savoury dip.
No photo but the simple clear chicken broth was good too. Nice mild chicken savoury sweet flavour with a bit of pleasant dang gui 當歸 herbal taste.
Ah Leong, the youthful boss hails from Taiping (Perak state) and already has nearly twenty years of experience making Hong Kong roasts and chicken rice.
Shall come back for Chai Lee's roasts next time - they look so good. The roast ducks were already sold out this morning as residents bought it for Ching Ming purposes.
Ah Leong said that these fried chicken is Chai Lee's top seller as it is especially popular with students at the nearby Southern College. Shall try these next time :-D
->> We were completely filled and enjoyed our Hainanese chicken rice meal at Chai Lee. The chicken is meaty, tender, smooth and flavoursome. The oily rice is not overly greasy, tasty and has a nice tender firm bite. The chili and ginger dip is fresh and has a nice hot spicy sting. The chicken herbal soup was delicious. A satisfying lunch and reasonably priced.
