There are three chicken rice stalls at Yuhua Village Market & Food Centre. Hup Hong is the second one that I tried so far and I liked it. (Two done, one last stall to go in a future post 🐔 )
There is always a queue at Hup Hong since I first came across them some 20 years ago. But, the queue is never unbearably long as Yuhua Village mainly serves local residents. 15 - 20 minutes wait at most.
About a dozen plump poached birds hung in the window along with a few fried ones. Going by the ratio of fried to poached chicken, the latter seems to be the main draw here.
The meat was served deboned. The meat cooked through (no pink) was tender, smooth and juicy. I like it that the juicy meat has natural chicken sweetness and this was complemented by a slight savoury sweetness and nice aroma from the light drizzle of dressing sauce.
I like Hup Hong's rice. It has a mild savoury sweetness and is neither overly greasy nor wet. It like my chicken rice to be slightly nutty to the bite like here at Hup Hong. (Just nice texture for me but some folks may find it on the too firm side though.)
Hup Hong is also good with the details. They shaved off the skin of the cucumber, so all I tasted was sweetness from the juicy crunchy slices sans the chewiness and bitterness of raw cucumber skin.
I like this achar too. Sweet slightly zesty pickled crunchy cucumber, carrot and pineapple.
Nice sharp spicy hot, slightly tangy, subtly savoury chili sauce.
What next? Come back with a bigger crew for one or at least half a bird. I am quite sure it will taste even better with more juices in larger chunks of chicken.
