This is the most popular stall at this little hawker centre frequented mostly by folks who live nearby. But, this wanton mee stall has foodies come from across the island for their old school spicy lardy noodles.

Aaron jio-ed me to try his favourite wanton mee some time ago already and today, we finally made it here. I arrived at Mayflower Market & Food Centre slightly ahead of Aaron.

Me on the phone: "What is the stall name"? (I only know it is a wanton mee stall and there are more than one here.)

Aaron: "The one with the longest queue".

Me: "What to order?"

Aaron: "..dida dida.... more fatty char siew, don't forget to ask for more lapok.... dida... dida... "

When I recited the order to auntie, uncle who was busy cooking inside popped his head out and asked: "Your friend is that chubby right?"

Me: 🤭 Not I say one 🤭

Aaron has been 453's regular for decades and they know who is who by what their customers order 😄

At $3.50 per set, the plate came with a huge mound of egg noodles topped with char siew slices, lapok (lard crouton), and chai sim greens.

The noodles were set on sambal chili which enveloped the strands after some good tossing. Compared to other wanton mee, the sauce is relatively dry but enough to spread around.

The noodles were relatively heavy gauge and had a nice crunch to the bite. The old school savoury spicy sauce packed quite a punchy sting. Its sauce is the old school type similar to the wanton mee at Bukit Merah Lane 1 BLK 125 and Koung's in Geylang (Sims Ave) but dryer than both.

453 Wanton Mee does lapok (lard croutons) differently from any other wanton noodle stall that I have come across. The lapok is crushed so that when tossed and folded into the noodles, it forms part of the sauce giving it a lardy taste and bits of crispy crunch throughout 😋 👍

The char siew slices were lean, tenderly chewy and mildly sweet savoury. We couldn't get Aaron's favourite fatty cuts as they were all sold out when we got here at 10am.

The wanton mee set came with wantons in a soup. We added sui kao or shrimp dumplings.

The wantons were good sized with a knob of tender lightly seasoned minced pork inside.

The shrimp dumplings though not the plumpest were quite tasty with sweet savoury flavours from minced pork and shrimp.

The savoury sweet slightly cloudy soup was tasty too.

We had a side of deep fried chicken feet stewed in a savoury dark sauce till the skin is fall-off-the-bone soft. Its mostly collagen with a bit of fat and meat. Savoury sweet flavour with spongy mushrooms in the stew adding their savoury taste to the dish.
