Honest Review of Song Fa Bak Kut Teh • Reliable Consistent Quality & Taste Across Outlets in Singapore

Honest_Review_Song_Fa_Bak_Kut_Teh

Song Fa Bak Kut Teh has 13 outlets in Singapore and really doesn't need any further introduction. Song Fa serves the peppery style of Singapore Teochew bak kut teh. I like their mild, well balanced flavours and consistency across their outlets.

Guests from overseas always ask to taste Singapore bak kut teh. Song Fa is one of my preferred choices to bring foreign guests as they can be relied upon to showcase Singapore bak kut teh in the best light, anytime, any day.

We met for lunch at Song Fa Bak Kut Teh's Suntec City branch. It was full house and there was a short queue of people waiting outside for a table.

The space is bright, compact, the decor is simple but neat, clean and comfortable. I like that familiar mural of Song Fa Bak Kut Teh push cart stall and old Singapore street scene, reminding everyone of the roots of the dish they are enjoying.

When the restaurant filled up, the ambiance sounded like a Hong Kong cha chaan teng (tea house). Lots of convivial chatter ringing around the eatery.

The two pieces of premium loin rib (also known as dragon bone) couldn't fit into the little bowl. This is Song Fa's highest end bak kut teh at $13.90++ a serving (which really is quite reasonable).

I had this pork rib soup. Song Fa's entry level bak kut teh at $7.80++ a serving.

The meat was fall-off-the-bone tender with a subtle squeaky bite which I like. The meat infused the likeable signature gentle savoury peppery flavours from the soup.

I like this mild savoury peppery taste profile and get this at every Song Fa outlet I go. I also like it that they are generous with soup top ups and it is served with friendly smiles.

Song Fa cleverly use their winning savoury peppery soup to make a few other dishes like liver soup, pork maw soup, fish slice soup, etc.

We had this Pork Kidney Soup (price $8.60++). The kidney slices were very well cleaned. They were fresh and had a soft crunch to the bite. The savoury peppery bak kut teh soup took on a slightly different taste profile with flavours from the kidney. Very nice!

Get this Chicken Thigh Soup with Beancurd Skin (price $6.50++). Pork and chicken are best partners - this full bodied soup is rich with layers of savoury sweetness held together by a subtle pepperiness.

Delightfully delicious. I want to remind you to order this when you are here.

Song Fa serves many side dishes to go with their signature bak kut teh. We had this meat & prawn roll or ngoh hiang (price $8.50++).

Get it! The crisp beautifully browned roll was packed with 5-spice seasoned soft minced pork and prawn inside. I bit into many little tender bits of prawn which were oh... so tasty.

Glazed BBQ Pork (price $4.99++). Song Fa's tender juicy savoury sweet char siew is very popular but personally it is missing that smokey toasty layer that old unkers (like me lah) are used to.

Claypot Spicy Double Mushroom (price $5.90++). Mushrooms sautéed in a savoury sauce. Spongy crunchy sweet mushrooms always work well with savoury sauce. A bit of chili pepper garnish add a little spicy heat to the dish. Nice.

Nice old school savoury peppery Teochew bak kut teh meal in a modern setting at Song Fa. Prices are competitive. Their consistency gives me confidence when I need to host foreign visitors to iconic dishes of Singapore cuisine again.
