Every time I am at 209 Kovan hawker centre, there is a queue at Fatt Soon Kueh. Why do so many people want to eat Fatt soon kueh?

Stall name: Fatt Soon Kueh (Kovan outlet)

Address: 209 Hougang Street 21, stall #01-17, Singapore 530209 (209 Kovan Market & Food Centre)

Nearest MRT: Kovan station

Hours: 7:00am - 6:00pm (Mon off)

Fatt Soon Kueh have three outlets (Bedok Interchange hawker centre, People's Park hawker centre and 209 Kovan). The stall at 209 Kovan is manned by two staff.

One handles orders and another makes the kueh. Yes, the kueh are individually hand made fresh at the stall. The skin are hand kneaded from scratch with glutinous rice and tapioca flour. The kueh are freshly steamed. This partly accounts for the long queue and waiting time.

Fatt Soon Kueh sells only three items - png kueh (rice cake), ku chai kueh (chive cake) and soon kueh (bamboo shoot cake but nowadays filled with jicama).

The steamed cakes sell for $1 a piece. $3 for box of three, can mix and match. I opted for 2 chive kueh and 1 soon kueh. Seldom eat png kueh nowadays because it's too much carbs for me.

The skin is relatively thin but stretchy, taut and soft-chewy. I like the texture of the skin. It is strong and held the generous filling inside well. I also like it that the skin is not overly greasy.

The chives were fresh and stir fried with savoury sauce and dried shrimp (hae bee) which took away almost all the green grassy taste. The end result is a nice well balanced blend of savoury umami and chive taste. Nice.

The jicama, carrot, dried shrimp and diced mushroom filling was the same - I mean well balanced savoury sweet. The jicama strips stir fried in a savoury sauce were soft tender, juicy and had very little crunch.

They provide chili sauce and dark soy sauce in sachets but I didn't use them.

If I want to eat traditional Teochew kueh and there is a Fatt Soon Kueh near by, I would buy it.
