I have a little obsession about chicken rice - I want to try the local chicken rice dish wherever I go. At Patong Beach in Phuket, my lovely travel kakis indulged me when I said that I wanted to try Briley Chicken Rice which is the Patong local townsfolk favourite 🙏

Briley has no English signboard, so we have to rely on the address and photograph of the shop to make sure we are at the right place. Look out for shop #102 Thanon Ratuthit Songroipi Road.

Briley have staples of Thai style Hainanese chicken rice, stewed pork rice, stewed pork leg rice, char siew rice (red pork) and sio bak rice (crispy pork).

Briley feels like an old school Singapore / Malaysia type shoplot restaurant. No air conditioning, bare bones furnishing but comfortable enough and has character. This is Patong, so expect to find locals and tourists / expatriates together in the little, no frills shop.

We had one poached chicken rice set (Baht 60), one roast chicken rice set (Baht 60), and poached chicken (Baht 150).

The chicken came deboned and with skin. The meat and skin were tender, moist (not juicy) and had nice, subtle natural chicken sweetness. The chicken was not very smooth and juicy as it was air cooled (unlike the Singapore / Cantonese style of dunking the chicken in cold water). The chicken came without any dressing sauce, which is the old Hainanese way.

The rice was cooked in chicken stock and fat, so it had a savoury chicken taste with underlying subtle rice sweetness. Nice.

Glad we ordered extra chicken meat as it was delicious. I have come to appreciate Thai style chicken rice more and now like my chicken without any dressing sauce, relying more on the chicken's natural flavour.

I like the dipping sauce at Briley. It was thick with tao jiao (fermented soy bean paste) so it was rich in savoury umami flavour with a slight sweetness. We can spike up the flavour and spiciness with chili padi and / or with raw garlic. I love this spicy-umami combination. I didn't use it with the chicken as I didn't want anything to interfere with the chicken's delicate flavours. I used the dip with the rice instead, and enjoyed it.

The chicken soup was robustly savoury salty and seemed to be loaded with seasoning.

Can try out Briley Chicken Rice when you are in Patong, Phuket. Don't expect to be blown away but slowly fall in love with humble, comfort food you can eat everyday.
