Nhong Rim Klong renowned for its crab meat dishes doesn't need any further introduction. Here's my take on the popular restaurant.
Despite its fame, Michelin Bib Gourmand award, local foodie guide accolades and strong social media presence, Nhong Rim Klong restaurant actually doesn't have any signboard at the moment. If there was, I couldn't see any despite trying when I was there ๐
Nhong Rim Klong is located in an alley, grimy and gritty. I like the hyperlocal feel of this place.
The ground level, long and narrow, bear bones furnishing, is dominated by a long bar counter with stools.
Nhong Rim Klong used to be a makeshift street side stall beside a funky smelling canal at nearby Ekkamai 21 before moving into these premises not long ago.
We were ushered upstairs which was full house. Yeah...., like downstairs, there was no decor ๐ It's like the old street side stall simply moved indoors and their fans followed.
The menu (an artefact from its legendary street & canal side days) is in both Thai and English but no pictures ๐ You may have what we had as a guide ๐ฌ
The crab omelette emulates Jay Fai's crab and egg roll with lots of chunky soft crab meat wrapped in fluffy, custardy egg. It tasted subtly sweet from the crab with egginess from the eggs and a bit of savouriness from the grease and seasonings e.g. fish sauce.
The mildly umami savoury fish sauce and bits of garlic brought out the natural flavours of the crab, egg and cabbage. It was a blend of different softness of the crab and moist egg with juicy crunch of the crisp cabbage. I enjoyed this dish.

Nhong Rim Klong at its quaint old, hyperlocal location between an alley and canal. I missed the chance to eat here ๐

Honestly I much prefer their new location. Their Pad Krapow Gai was quite impressive, among other offerings. But I still think the crab omelette, though not cold in the middle, is quite unimpressive.
ReplyDeleteThe other time when I was at their longkang location, the crab omelette was cold in the middle. Was praying so hard I won’t end up in the hospital afterwards.
The smell does add a bit extra to the experience.

Why would you want to brag about eating a bad crab omelette next to a longkang?
ReplyDeleteThis is done only for tourists.
They are well known for other renditions and those r very delicious.
the longkang adds to the flavour and ambience. especially when it's raining as well, cos the spray adds the unknown X-factor ๐คฃ
