The trendy riverside cafes and restaurants at the Tha Maharaj Mall are great for hungry, thirsty and feet tired tourists after a day touring Bangkok's heritage sites nearby like the Royal Grand Palace, Wat Pho (Reclining Buddha) and Wat Arun (historic former Royal Temple). We had our dinner at the riverside Savoey Tha Maharaj and enjoyed ourselves with the food, service and environment very much.

Wat_Arun

We spent a whole day eating and touring around Bangkok. We arrived at Wat Arun or Temple of Dawn in the late afternoon.  Wat Arun was the Royal Temple during the reign of King Taksin (1767 - 1782) who reestablished the Kingdom of Siam after Ayutthaya fell to the Burmese in 1767. It was King Taksin who moved the capital of Siam from Ayutthaya to Bangkok.

From Wat Arun, we took a ferry to dinner. In Bangkok, many places are accessible by ferry on the Chao Praya River. It is comfortable and affordable, besides being an interesting way to get around Bangkok's notorious famed traffic jams. There are many beautiful riverfront sights from the ferry boat.

Our dinner was at Savoey Tha Maharaj, a popular Thai seafood restaurant at the riverside Tha Maharaj Mall which is a boutique collection of trendy shops (crafts, trinkets, books), cafes and restaurants.

Savoey Tha Maharaj is on a pier looking over the Chao Phraya River. The airy, spacious restaurant can accommodate large groups like our party of six easily. As it is on upper ground, it felt like dining on the roof of a ferry boat cruising the Chao Phraya River 😄

These was a lot of food for even six of us as we had literally been eating from day break till sunset over the Chao Phraya River 😄

The centre piece was the Savoey Tom Yum Seafood Platter.

It's like a large bouquet of blanched lobster, crab, prawn and mussel with aromatic herbs and spices doused in savoury spicy tom yum goong. Everything in the platter was fresh and tasty. Premium ingredients with their natural best brought out by seemingly simple techniques, expertly executed.

Steamed Seabass with Lime and Chili Sauce. Fresh seabass with its natural sweet flavour lifted with an appetising savoury spicy garlicky soupy sauce.

Grilled River Prawns fresh and succulent with natural sweetness in its tender snowy white flesh. The head is bigger than body and tail, but nice 😃

The grilled river prawns were nice but the Grilled Giant River Prawns were mind blowing delicious 😮 The giant river prawn was the size of my palm, have slightly firmer, crunchier meat than their smaller cousin and slightly sweeter. The real kick came from the orangey creamy rich head butter which umami savouriness boosted the deliciousness quotient by quantum levels. Really jaw dropping delicious.

At Baht 850+ (S$35+) a pop, giant river prawn is a luxury (to me lah) but in my humble opinion it tastes better than even all the live lobsters that I've had so far. So, the next time I am anywhere in Thailand, I'll look for giant river prawn 😬

Fried Jumbo Crabmeat in Yellow Curry Sauce. Rich spice flavours and aromas that complement the natural delicate sweetness of pulled crab meat.

Deep Fried Shrimp Cake with a slight crisp outside and soft-tender moistness inside. A tasty blend of savouriness and subtle sweetness of mashed shrimp.

Stir Fried Cabbage with Fish Sauce. A humble, homely delicious dish of crunchy fresh juicy greens stir fried in a umami savoury sauce. After all that rich food today (and the past few days 😅 ), I really appreciate this comfort dish 😋

Baked Pineapple Fried Rice. Quite common in Singapore but this was the first time I am having pineapple fried rice in Thailand. The rice is stir fried with curry powder (mostly turmeric), pineapple, and eggs which gave it a golden yellow hue. It was a flavourful blend of sweet, tangy, savoury and not overly greasy. Not spicy. Topped with pulled crab meat, meat floss and shelled shrimps for added flavour.

Savoey Tha Maharaj is a good pit stop if you are touring the major heritage area around the Royal Grand Palace (walking distance), Wat Pho temple, and Wat Arun temple, etc.

Prices are slightly premium but you cool your heels and dine on fresh, well executed seafood in a clean, comfortable, riverside environment with a beautiful view of the Chao Phraya River sunset. It's a great way to cap off a memorable day in Bangkok.

Savoey has nine outlets in Bangkok and Pattaya. Here is my review of the outlet at Terminal 21 Asok.
