Hao Ke Fang Hakka Coffee Shop Restaurant in Kelapa Sawit Kulai 好客坊

We randomly rolled into Kelapa Sawit in Kulai 🤣 So, Ellone called Kulai 地头 Jason and KK, and we just randomly decided to meet at Hao Ke Fang 好客坊 to plot our next moves 🤣

It's not really that anyhow random lah. When we have to make a quick decision, we often fall back on the familiar and reliable.

Hao Ke Fang has been around for a long time. It serves economic rice, lei cha rice, yong tau foo, cai ban (dumplings), "abacus seed" (suan pan zhi) and other Hakka food icons like cha rou (fried pork), etc.

They also have drip and espresso coffee by My Liberica. Anyway, My Liberica's coffee bean plantation, roastary and homebase are right here in Kelapa Sawit, Kulai.

The place has a rustic, laid back, kampung feel. Bright, very clean, decorated with a village life theme, simply furnished and very well lovingly kept.

The back opens into the famous Kelapa Sawit back lane with street art and murals. We chose to sit here as weather was good and it was still shady and breezy outside.

As we only intended to park here for a short while to gather our thoughts on where to go next, we only had a jug of guava leaf tea and a lei cha rice to share.

But, I was so impressed with Hao Ke Fang's lei cha rice that I decided that I have to share this now. And, will come back and try other dishes in the future.

The topping of stir fried vegetables like long bean, spinach, cabbage, chye poh, nuts, etc., were fresh and nicely done. The skilfully stir fried vegetables still retained their freshness, colour, crunch, moistness, and taste. They were also carefully laid on top of the rice.

For rice, Jason chose toasty puffed rice instead of the usual white rice or brown rice. First time I have lei cha rice this way (with puffed rice).

The signature green tea was quite thick, creamy, grainy, the way I like and its had a complex yet balanced blend of complementary green minty aromatic flavours and smell.

I enjoyed the contrasting textures from crisp to crunchy to soft. I also like the complex mix of flavours especially when I dumped the entire bowl of green tea into the crunchy puff rice and vegetables.

I love Hao Ke Fang's lei cha rice - simple and nice.

We will be back for the lei cha and other dishes, and update this post after that.

Oh... We decided to go to the hottest nasi lemak place in Kulai Manmila Nasi Lemak next 👈 click

  1. They have airbnb-ish accommodations too. Not a bad idea if you want to further explore kelapa sawit.
