When 勇记三间庄 opened in Johor Bahru serving their KL style pork noodles last year, I went to try it immediately as I love this type of noodles. My favourite Kuala Lumpur pork noodle stall is at Jalan Imbi in KL since I first tried it over 20 years ago. I was hoping 勇记三间庄 can help satisfy my craving for KL pork noodles.
Truth be told, it was not love at first bite at 勇记. It's quite different from what I am accustomed to at Jalan Imbi. As I didn't enjoy this that much, I decided not to blog about it then.
I tried 勇记 pork noodles again today - I appreciate it more now even though it is still different from my favourite at Jalan Imbi.
I went to the 勇记三间庄 stall at Hoa Kee koipitiam in Taman Gaya as it is nearest to where I am. 勇记三间庄's main JB shop is in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah where the pork balls are made and they have another stall in Taman Desa Cemerlang.
Hoa Kee is a large, popular kopitiam in Taman Gaya with over 10 food stalls.
The 勇记三间庄 stall at Hoa Kee is run by 亞雲 who hails from Kuala Lumpur.
The pork balls simmering in the pot. The pork is ground by machine and finished by hand.
勇记's KL pork noodle set costs RM6 (this would cost RM8 - 10 at Jalan Imbi in Kuala Lumpur).
The fried minced pork topping is ground finer at 勇记 than at Imbi. 勇记's minced pork is also sweeter and less intensely savoury in flavour - this I believe would appeal better to JB palates in general.
The sausage 燒腸 is also savoury sweet (but milder than at Jalan Imbi).
The savoury sweet sauce envelopes the kway teow kia well. I like the taste of this sauce (which is quite different from the intense, robust savoury sauce at Imbi). There is a peppery hint as they squeeze a puff of white pepper in the noodle just before serving.
The soup with two pork balls and two pork "cubes".
The medium bodied broth is mildly savoury sweet peppery.
The pork ball is light, soft and spongy. Flavour is mildly savoury sweet.
The pork "cube" is also light, soft, spongy, mildly savoury sweet compared to that from Jalan Imbi (which is heavy and dense).
勇记's sambal chili is good - it is savoury spicy sweet with lots of dried shrimps inside.
👉 Nice KL style pork noodles. Delicious sweet savoury sauce and fried minced pork. Light, soft, spongy hand finished pork balls and "cubes". Tasty soup and good sambal chili. Worth a try if you are near to any of the three 勇记三间庄 outlets in Johor Bahru.

ReplyDeleteThat was a different stall serving another style of KL pork noodles. Both are in the same kopitiam.
