Revisiting HJ Abu Soto Power. New Building, Same Top Soto

Pasir-Putih-HJ-Abu-Soto-Power

Took a rather long drive to Kampung Pasir Putih in Pasir Gudang for one of my favourite mee soto ayam places at HJ Abu Soto Power.

As I drove up past Restoran Rahmat (the famous fried siakap place), I saw this unfamiliar new building. Have I gotten the address wrong? I wondered to myself.... .

I stepped up and the signboard confirmed that this was indeed, HJ Abu Soto Power. So, now the famous mee soto of Johor is housed in a spanking new building. It's airy and breezy, very comfortable though it lost a bit of the rustic kampung feel of the old wooden building.

I was glad to see Pak HJ Abu and Ibu again as it was nearly 5 years since I last came here.

I congratulated Pak HJ Abu on his new shop. He then told me that a fire in Feb last year (2017) destroyed the old building but Pak HJ Abu has taken it in his stride. He cited a Chinese saying "The old don't go, the new don't come" as he looked forward to the future.

I took a quick peek at the pot of soto stock - they were still making the Power broth the old way with whole chicken and lots of spices boiling for at least 4 hours.

Pak HJ Abu's mee soto comes with bee hoon (or mee, rice cake or mixed, your choice) in a bowl of spiced chicken broth, topped with hand pulled slivers of chicken meat. For an additional 50 sens, you get a pair of large chicken feet. Everyone (well... almost) had them, so I had them too (afterall, I am Singaporean love chicken feet).

The chicken broth was light bodied with mild taste and aroma of spices, and very gentle hot spiciness.

Pak HJ Abu is quite generous with the pulled chicken which was tender, juicy and had a slight natural chicken taste. It also had the mild taste of the spiced broth which was absorbed in the slivers of chicken.

I like this spice loaded sambal chili with a sharp green tasting sting. I scooped in quite of lot of this sambal chili which gave Pak HJ Abu's mee soto the Power in its name.

Those big chicken feet? They had a nice subtle spiced flavour from boiling in the soto broth. They were fun to eat as they had a springy crunchy texture with some soft spongy tissue in the thick pads of the feet. Eeeks.. did someone say?

I also had Pak HJ Abu's tauhu goreng.

They are very generous with the crushed toasted peanuts which makes a good topping blanketing the fried tofu cubes, bean sprouts and cucumber slices. The kicap sauce adds a mild savoury spiced flavour to the nutty sauce.

Mee soto ayam with tauhu goreng together make a very satisfying, filling meal at HJ Abu Soto Power.
