Today, we enjoyed breakfast with locals at Cheras Flats Woo Pin Fish Head Noodles 湖濱魚頭米. It's meals like this that make me fall in love with KL again and again. Personally, I consider it a blessing to be able to find joy in good food everywhere, including simple food in humble places.
Woo Pin Fish Head Noodles is located at the ground level of the old four storey flats in Cheras. Nowadays, with navigation apps, finding unfamiliar places has never been easier. I use WAZE app for stress free navigation. (Woo Pin has many branch outlets conveniently located around KL city centre but this is the original parent stall in Cheras.)
Cheras Flats Woo Pin spans four shop lots, all of which were full house this New Year's Eve morning.
There were even seats in the narrow courtyard between the flats. So charming 😄
We joined the locals under the tent in front of the shop. We love the casual, friendly atmosphere here.
The menu and price list is posted in prominent places around the eatery.
We had a plate of fried fish skin while waiting for our fish head noodles to be ready. Almost every table had an order of this fried fish skin (price RM8 per serving).
We started with a plate of fried Song fish skin which were crackly crispy like thin biscuit. They have a mild savoury flavour and is quite addictive. The fried fish skin doesn't feel greasy but there were a few drops of oil at the bottom of the plate. It's the best fried fish skin that I have tasted so far. Thinking about it makes me crave for it now.... 😂
We had a clear version which come with bee hoon and pieces of Song fish in a tea coloured broth garnished with tomatoes, ginger, chives and fried shallot.
The tea coloured broth is mildly savoury sweet with additional layers of flavours from the sourish preserved cabbage, mildly spicy ginger and sourish sweet fresh tomatoes. There is a strong presence of Shaoxing (rice) wine 紹興酒 in the broth. The complex blend of flavours in the broth is appetising.
There were several pieces of lightly battered fried Song fish meat and also boney head pieces in the bowl. The fried fish have a nice feel to the bite and have a slight sweet flavour.
We had a second bowl - this time with Carnation milk added to the broth and non fried Song fish.
The same savoury sweet sourish broth thicken and further sweeten by evaporated milk.
The pieces of Song fish were oh... so.... tenderly soft, slippery smooth and naturally sweet. I hardly noticed the characteristic earthiness of Song fish due to its sweetness and the savoury sweet sourish broth.
We also like that the bee hoon had a nice subtle spring to the bite despite soaking in the broth. (There is also the option of yi mein 伊面 or fried egg noodles which I shall try next time.)
At Cheras Flat Woo Pin Fish Head Noodles, we can smell Hua Diao wine 花雕酒 in the air as each bowl of fish head noodle is given a dash of this wine during cooking. There were also bottles of Hua Diao wine on every table for customers who want more of the wine's sweet sourish flavour in their fish noodles. (Hua Diao wine is also known as Shao Xing wine as it originated from the city of Shao Xing in China's Zhejiang province.)
4-Stars (out of 5). Fish Head Noodles 魚頭米 is one of the signature food experiences of KL - Cheras Flat Woo Pin Fish Head Noodles 湖濱魚頭米 is one of the best places to get it. If you are a fish head lover, Cheras Flats Woo Pin is well worth the effort to go deep into the KL suburbia for a taste of it's Song fish and interesting broth. Must remember to get their fried fish skin too.
