Canton-i @ AEON Tebrau City is one of the places to get authentic Hong Kong style wanton noodles in Johor Bahru.

The bowl of egg noodles comes with piping hot soup, a stalk of kai lan greens, four large shrimp wantons and a sprinkle of chopped spring onion.

The soup spoon was slotted below the noodles and wantons. The idea is to keep at least part of the noodles and wantons above the soup line so that their crunchiness and spring are retained a little longer.

When the bowl of wanton mee arrived, I could smell the faint pleasant aroma of shrimp.

The soup was piping hot. It had the colour of light Chinese tea and was not overly greasy.

The soup had quite robust savouriness but I can still taste the layers in it (which I like). Accordingly to information in the menu, the soup is made by boiling dried sole fish 大地魚, pork bones and shrimps for at least 6 hours.

According to information in the menu, Canton-i egg noodles are made in Hong Kong with Canadian high gluten wheat flour and are air flown weekly to the restaurant.

The egg noodles were light and slender. They were done half a notch below al dente. They had a slight spring to the bite which I like. The egg and wheat flavour were very subtle and there was no kansui 枧水 (alkaline water) taste (characteristic of HK egg noodles).

There were four good size shrimp and pork wantons. The wanton wraps were smooth though not slippery. Not the thinnest skin and was actually slightly firm where the skin folds gathered together.

The shrimp had a crustacean savoury sweetness. The meat was firm with a stiff kind of crunch that lacked bounciness.

Price on the menu was RM16 but after adding wet tissue, peanuts, GST and service tax, it came to just over RM20.

Not very filling in itself (especially for guys) as this wanton mee is meant to be eaten with other dishes or as a snack.
