Yeah, I know it is a bit late to share this as rice dumpling / dragon boat festival is this coming Monday (14 Jun 2021), but this Mala Xiang Guo flavour rice dumpling is so unique, some of you might still want to make a dash for it.
The Mala Xiang Guo rice dumpling is made by Nicole whose
Vegetarian / Vegan and Multigrain rice dumplings, I wrote about a couple of days ago.
Nicole's rice dumplings are wrapped in Giant Pandan Leaf and tied with cotton string instead of plastic raffia string.
Giant Pandan Leaves are more fragrant compared to the common smaller variety. But, they need more preparation as they have thorns and are thicker, so need to boil them longer. They are also harder to wrap as the thick leaf is stiffer.
But, Nicole insists on Giant Pandan Leaves because her grandma always used it and also it makes the rice dumplings taste and smell better.
The Mala Xiang Guo rice dumpling is relatively large; it weighs 300 grams. Most of Nicole's other rice dumpling flavours also weigh 300 grams.
The Mala Xiang Guo rice dumpling looks like a typical bak chang except for the dried chili pepper peeking out.
The glutinous rice was soft-tender with a slight chewy bite. It was not overly greasy which I like.
It was gently savoury sweet with a bit of crunch and squeaky bite from the ingredients. The signature lips and tongue numbing heat of Mala chili pepper infused in the dumpling was quite gentle, quite mild.
Needless to say, if you chew on the chili pepper directly, your mouth will go boomz from numbing heat ๐ฅ Well, some of us like it extra hot, so yeah ๐ถ
