✍️ 7 Jan 2024. Raining cats and dogs today. We ran here at Sims Vista Hawker Centre for shelter after we aborted plan A as our targeted stall was closed contrary to their published hours 🙄 (not unusual in Singapore and Malaysia 🙄 x2).
Our plan B was Hollywood Braised Duck Rice Duck Porridge. For me, it was an opportunity to update my post on this popular old braised duck stall.
Nothing seemed to have changed since I last came here two years ago. Hollywood is still drawing long queues.
The braised ducks were flying off the hooks fast and were being replenished.
Besides duck rice and porridge, Hollywood also has kway chap (rice sheets).
We opted for porridge as I had kway chap the last time. Everything here for SGD14.
We had braised duck breast, drumstick, liver and gizzard. The meat came in big chunks and bathed in their signature dark, thick, starchy sauce.
Nothing changed.
The starchy thick dark sauce was quite robustly herbal (Chinese five spice), savoury, sweet. The duck meat was tender, moist but didn't have much flavour on its own. Neither was there any duck gaminess.
We love the porridge which came default with a big splash of of the signature starchy herbal, savoury, sweet sauce and a generous dash of white pepper.
The sweet porridge layered with the signature dark sauce was delicious.
Add in duck meat to the porridge and my life is complete.

✍ 1 Nov 2021. I have been wanting to try this Hollywood Braised Duck Rice stall as I was curious why it is able to command long queues at Sims Vista food centre, especially during lunch.
Stall name: Hollywood Braised Duck Rice · Duck Porridge
Address: 49 Sims Place, Singapore 380049 (stall #01-73, Sims Vista
Market & Food Centre)
Nearest MRT: 5 minutes walk from Aljunied station
Tel: 9084 3407
Hours: 9:30am - 3:30pm (Weds off)
I arrived early and was their first
customer, the moment they opened for the day at 9:30am. There were many
options - there's white rice, yam rice, noodles and even kway chap.
I ordered duck and large intestines to go with kway - my favourite things. This
came up to $8.80. It was more food than I wanted as it would end my day's
food hunt prematurely 🙄
Truth be told, my first impression was a
little underwhelming. The duck was chopped into odd shaped, little pieces,
not the thin beautiful slices I prefer. It was smothered under a flood of thick slimy gooey
dark sauce while I prefer my duck meat clean and neat with just a light sauce.
Tasted a bit
of the thick gooey sauce first. It was not bad, I like it - gently herbal, sweet, savoury.
The kway (rice sheet) was generic and
came in a bowl of light braising stock with a splash of the same gooey dark
sauce. Tissue thin, smooth and flavoured with herbal, sweet,
and savoury layers from the two sauces. Can Nice.
The duck was not
chopped prettily but the pieces were cooked to the doneness I like - tender, moist, sweetish and had a
subtle bit of gamey taste. The herbal sweet savoury sauce gave it an
overlay of additional flavours. I like the texture and taste.
The large
intestine was soft-tender, spongy. Well cleaned but still had a subtle bit
of natural taste which I like. (I don't like those where they washed out
all the natural taste from the offal.) Again, the same gooey sauce
complemented the intestines' subtle natural taste well.
Hollywood is an 45 year old stalwart now at Sims Drive food centre. You may like it too, if you
prefer mildly herbal type of braised duck with gooey sauce.
Next time, I want to have their porridge drenched in light braising stock and gooey sauce.
Hollywood Braised Duck Rice is actually the Lian Kee Braised Duck stall at the old Hin Hollywood Canteen at Tanjong Katong Road since 1976.
When Hin Hollywood Canteen closed in 2011, Lian Kee moved to here at Sims Vista Market & Food Centre, and rebranded Hollywood Braised Duck Rice.
I forgot to ask the stall owners the reason for the change. Perhaps, it was to keep the memory and connection with their well loved old address.

ReplyDelete"Been eating their braised duck rice since 90s, tis stall wasn't named hollywood when they relocated to present Sims Vista, though it was tat same one in former hollywood cinema canteen/FC, ... but as many long time customers been looking for them after tat canteen closed for redevelopment to present Kinex Mall, ...they finally renamed Hollywood to let customers kno its them, ...took me few years to locate them after they relocated to Sims Vista."
I ate at there when I was in primary school! Glad to know they're still around!
ReplyDeletedoes it tend to be the case that Hokkien-style braised duck is prepared with the starchy gravy, whereas Teochew-style braised duck is the salty watery gravy?
ReplyDeleteWonton mee at the nearby Haig Road Hawker centre, Chicken rice was there as well (helmed by the younger brother),but I think recently closed for good.
