When you come to Commonwealth Crescent hawker centre, whatever you may eat, do wash it down with a bowl of $1 Ah Mah cheng tng. It doesn't require much tummy space, taste good, and gives you that warm fuzzy feeling.
Ah Mah's cheng tng stall is actually named Xi Le Ting 喜乐亭 and she serves red bean soup, green bean soup and wheat porridge (bubur terigu in Malay) with coconut milk (besides cheng tng). All the items on Ah Mah's menu are popular.
Ah Mah approaches half a century in business. She is still deft and nimble while her customers wait patiently in line. A queue usually forms during lunch.
Ah Mah serves her desserts in old school ceramic bowls (if you dine in). I am fascinated by the large brass pot she uses to simmer her green bean soup.
For $1, Ah Mah serves a tasty cheng tng with a generous amount of ingredients. There's white fungus, big sago pearls (made of tapioca), dried longan, pang da hai (malva nut), barley and dried persimmon.
The tea colour base soup is flavoured with pandan leaves and infused the flavours from all the ingredients, so the soup has layers of sweetness. Still, the overall taste has just the right level of moderate sweetness for me. The ingredients provided an interesting mix of soft-tender, soft-crunch textures to the bite.
So much joy, pleasure and fuzzy warm feeling in a simple bowl of sweetness.
