We met up at Telok Blangah Drive Food Centre, tried a few food stalls including the popular Seng Huat prawn mee. It's old school, generously portioned, tasty, and excellent value.

Stall name: Seng Huat Prawn Noodles 成發蝦麵

Address: #01-38, 79 Telok Blangah Market & Food Centre, Singapore 100079

Nearest MRT: 5 - 7 minutes walk from Telok Blangah station

Hours: 6:00am - 2:00pm (Tues, Weds, Thurs off)

You won't be able to make out much from Seng Huat's sun bleached signboard. The stall have been here for nearly 30 years - brand is still going strong, nevermind the faded signboard. Just look for stall #01-38, or simply the longest queue in this old, small but well patronised hawker centre.

The stallholders were very nice - I mean, I only bought one serving to taste but requested for two sets of utensils which they happily provided 🙏

The large serving costs $3.50. There is a smaller $3 serving.

Seng Huat have both prawn mee and fishball noodles but I only saw people order the former 😄

Three of us, we went straight for the soup because for prawn mee, the litmus test is in the soup (in my opinion lah).

It tasted strongly of lard, fried shallot, followed by crustacean umami. The flavours were all robust though prawn umami was not as pronounced as the lard and fried shallot. The soup was quite greasy.

There's a lot in the bowl for $3.50. The mound of yellow noodles came with sauce, shelled & deveined prawn, pork slices, fish cakes slices, and sprinkles of scallion and fried shallot. There's lard croutons, here and there in the bowl.

The sauce was lardy, tasted of fried shallots and oil, then a bit of savoury spiciness from the sambal. Overall, the robust flavours felt old school. The prawn, pork and fish cake all tasted fresh (though the pork was a tad overcooked).

If I live in Telok Blangah, I will be having Seng Huat prawn mee regularly and it'll be a part of my life.
