We had a great time at The Malayan Council - the food, place, vibes, all come together marvellously. Disclaimer: This food review might sound extra exuberant because we had hilarious company 😄😂
The Malayan Council is located in the historic Kampong Glam precinct. It is just across Bussorah Street from sister restaurant The Fortune Cookie.
The Malayan Council's interior is bright, clean, the furnishings comfortable and well spaced out. Decor is relatively simple yet tasteful.
The Malayan Council serve Western style dishes with Malay touches. The innovative menu is extensive - the extract above gives you an idea of some of owner chef Hafiz's creations at The Malayan Council.
Once we put in our orders, the dishes were served quickly. First up was Singapore Chili Lobster (price $48++).
It's linguine pasta tossed in a thick heavy creamy chili lobster sauce with egg drop and served with a flaming red 300 gram Maine lobster.
The linguine done soft al dente was completely wrapped with thick creamy, likeable sweet savoury, spicy sauce specially concocted by The Malayan Council. I enjoyed it.
The slab of ribeye was cooked to medium doneness and slathered with a thick sweet, spicy, savoury sauce. I enjoyed the flavours though the tender steak was a little chewy and any beefiness was masked by the robust masak merah sauce.
The steak came with shoestring fries fried to a nice golden crisp outside, dressed with truffle flavour oil and topped with savoury grated parmesan cheese.
Nasi Daging Utara came with a mound of soft, fluffy basmati rice cooked with aromatic spices - the aroma of cinnamon was prominent. At the side was a thick rope of beef smothered in a thick blanket of sauce. There was a dollop of spicy hot sambal at the side and a little cup of umami savoury spicy sauce with pickles.
We were not sure what cut of beef this was but it was thick and had a strip of luscious soft tendon on top.
The thick rope of beef was soft-tender interlaced with visceral gelatinous soft tissue and smooth soft tendon. It had layers of savoury and beefy flavours with hints of spice. So delicious!
Oriental Smoked Duck & Lychee Salad (price $21++). Fresh lettuce was topped with smoked duck slices and fresh lychee, and dressed with a lychee flavoured sweet sauce with zesty juices and olive oil.
I like the savoury sweet smoked duck slices and leafy greens with the refreshing sweet lychee sauce.
Courtesy fried chicken wings with kicap pedas (sweet soy sauce with chili padi). The Malayan Council (like its sister restaurant The Fortune Cookie) serve small bites as gestures of sincerity and hospitality.
Mid way through our meal, owner chef Hafiz joined us briefly. There was instant rapport between chefs Benny and Hafiz. There is a kind of camaraderie and mutual respect between F & B professionals. Both chefs were admiring each other's work before and this was their first face to face meeting.
The Malayan Council pioneered the iconic Ondeh Ondeh Cake in 2015 and it is still their top selling dessert today. It's a stack of moist spongy pandan cake, layered with gula Melaka and coconut Chantilly cream. (Price $9.50++)
Cheers!
We will be back at The Malayan Council to try their other dishes.
