Spent two weeks eating and mingling with Clementi residents at Clementi 448 Market & Food Centre. Of some fifty stalls here, the townsfolk favourites are the wanton mee, Hainanese porridge, fried carrot cake and lor mee stalls.
Kian Seng serve a simple, no frills lor mee. The lor (sauce) is thick and doesn't turn watery quickly. It tastes robustly savoury, overlaid with tangy black vinegar and heat from sambal and raw garlic. Scallion and fried shallot add more flavour and aromatics.
The thick noodles are complemented by braised egg, braised pork belly, well seasoned fried pork balls, and fish cake slices. I like their braised pork belly - soft-tender, juicy, sweet savoury. Price $3.50.

Boon Kee serve their wanton mee with an old school type sauce laced with ketchup. The noodles are generic, done soft-tender with a slight crunch. The char siew is dry and chewy. The wantons are meaty and seasoned in the traditional way with sesame seed oil, soy sauce and pepper.
Their big draw is their quite robust savoury, tangy, spicy, aromatic sauce laced with ketchup - that is, if you like ketchup. For ketchup laced sauce that I've tried (in Singapore and Pontian), Boon Kee makes one of the most flavourful ones. Price $3.50.

Fried Carrot Cake stall has the longest queue at this hawker centre but clears quickly - they work fast and fry with two stoves. The stall is in the third generation now.
Generic carrot cake fried with generous amounts of oil and eggs. The fried carrot cake is quite greasy, and tastes savoury, eggy, spicy (as I asked for chili). They don't have chai poh (preserved radish) in their carrot cake (which would have added another layer of sweet savoury flavour as well as crunch). Price $3.
Soon Lee is a well loved stall serving Hainanese style porridge which is between Cantonese congee and Teochew porridge in texture - Hainanese porridge has visible almost-dissolved rice grains. Soon Lee have pork, chicken and fish porridge. The ingredients are fresh and the porridge is flavour boosted by their special savoury aromatic sauce.
Oh... there is no visible queue at Soon Lee because they serve their porridge to you at your table 😄 Price $3.60 with egg.

Clementi 448 Market & Food Centre is a pleasant, warm community hub well loved by residents in the neighbourhood. The popular stalls serve comfort food without frills at affordable prices.
Did I missed your favourite stall(s). Please let me know in the comments. I will return to Clementi to try your recommendation(s). Thank you 🙏
