Toa Payoh Lor 8 Hand Made Fish Ball Noodle Yong Tau Foo • Hidden Gem 八巷手工鱼圆麵

Actually, we wanted to eat at another fish ball place but it happened to be closed 😅 So, we activated Plan B to go to Toa Payoh Lor 8 Market & Food Centre. Strange, I totally forgotten about this hawker centre even though I grew up in Toa Payoh 😬

Buddy said this stall hand makes their fishballs and yong tau foo. It is quite popular with residents living nearby though it has very little social media mention - the kind of stalls I am looking for 👍

Actually, this hawker centre in Lor 8 Toa Payoh itself has a relatively low profile.

A quick scan revealed a good spread of inviting looking hand made yong tau foo pieces.

There were the usual suspects of vegetables but they looked market fresh  - their colours bright and vibrant.

I like it that the yong tau foo were not just  filled with surimi / fish paste but mixed with minced pork and bits of vegetables.

The handmade fishballs looked good, I mean they don't look like factory made "ping pong" balls.

There were lots of fried items and they looked well fried - crisp and golden brown like the bean curd skin and ngoh hiang (pork roll in bean curd skin).

They have fried yam which is not that common. I like yam.

Pork balls and fish balls spiked with chili pepper.

Exotic items like these small intestines get me excited about old school yong tau foo stalls I like.

Prices are competitive. Each fishball at 40 cents, yong tau foo piece 60 cents.

Five of us, we ordered a spread of yong tau foo and fishballs to share, and had our individual carbs.

I opted for mee pok dry. The noodles were nicely done, tender with a light springy bite. The lardy, greasy sauce complemented the noodles well with their savoury spicy flavours. The noodles were spiked with fried garlic and lard croutons which added more flavour and aroma.  Intensity was at just the right level for me.

I like the fishballs. Soft tender juicy with a subtle spring to the bite. The savoury sweet flavours were gentle. I can taste the freshness of the fish meat.

The yong tau foo pieces were well formed. The meat and fish filling was tender and juicy, fresh and mildly naturally sweet. The vegetables were done just right with a bit of soft crunchiness remaining.

The deep fried pieces were so crisp and chewy.

Their sweet sauce, chili sauce and crushed pulpy fresh chili pepper were also very good.

I must admit that we were engrossed in enjoying the conversation and food, so I didn't take much photos nor detailed notes 😬

This fishball and yong tau foo stall is very good all round. I will definitely be back for more and a more detailed tasting (today we were more busy chatting). Indeed a hidden gem.

  1. In the same HC, there is this kway chap stall which opens from 6.30am and sold out around 9am. Opens Wed to Sun. One of my favourite.
