It's almost 10 years since I last tried a cronut. It was a global craze then that started from Dominique Ansel's Bakery in New York City. I happened to be in NYC then, and naturally gave it a try.
By now, I have already forgotten what exactly is a cronut and how it tastes.
So, I am curious that 50 Years Taste of Tradition offers it in Singapore today. Couldn't resist giving it a try.
Oh... My memory is coming back. It's a cross between a croissant and donut, hence the name cronut.
That's why it's got many folds and layers like a croissant, with a hole in the middle like a donut.
The bite of the accordion folds felt spongy and airy. The folds were partially filled with chocolate lava. The browned outside of the cronut had a subtle crisp and was flaky like a good croissant.
There's actually more chocolate than I expected in the folds and as topping. It tasted sweet, more like a donut than croissant. So, it feels like a croissant and tastes like a donut.
In today's market, it actually quite a steal at $2.30 a piece. Aunty suggested I get two, cheaper she said. But, I needed only one for tasting and photos.
Well, if you need a sweet gift, can check out 50 Years Taste of Tradition. Their egg tarts are also among the best in Singapore.
